Yea I didn't get the 12 week sono/ testing for it because it made no difference to me. Looking back I would have done it for 2 reasons 1 being we missed out on seeing the baby. 2 if she would have had an issue it would have been nice to prepare for it but I woukdnt have given up my kid for anything.

As a mother, I would be devastated, but I still don't understand how she could be so quick to just give her baby away like that. How awful.

It is sad, there are a lot of countries that do this. My cousin's wife posts about it fairly often on FB (they have a daughter with DS). In some places, children with DS are put into orphanages and when they age out, they are just shipped off to psychiatric hospitals. It's awful.

Yeah it said 98% of babies born with DS there are given up. I'm sure there is zero support for parents trying to raise them. But this family did have the option to move. It is so heartbreaking. I can't imagine giving up your newborn.

The more I think about this story, the worse I feel about my initial reaction towards the mom.

Yeah, I can't stop thinking about this. I can't really harbor ill feelings toward the mom because there are so many factors playing into the decision. It sounds like there is no support as well as cultural stigma toward DS in the country. It is a really complicated story. I don't think it is so black and white - mom is an asshole, dad is a hero. While I could never think of giving up my child I have also never been in this type of situation with all of these extra outside factors playing a part.

it's already up to 200k.
I doubt there's more to the story. There's more to the story about why that is the norm in that country/region... but that's the reason.
There's a chance a viral story could change things for the future but it is the culture there.

I've heard a lot of accounts like this too.

And here in the US, the termination rates are really high if a baby comes back with DS.  It can be so hard for someone to accept a dx like this, and not everyone feels they can handle it.  I respect that, even though I don't think I could bring myself to go to that extent if I was in that situation.

It's sad that the mom walked out like this, but in a way it might be for the better if she wasn't willing to put in the time that is needed to care for her baby.  This little guy is, however, lucky to have a dad that cares for him deeply like he does.  I do feel horrible for him that he's now facing a divorce while he's getting to know his newborn and figuring everything out.

Heartbreaking premise no matter how you look at it. Even if the mother stated she couldn't handle a special needs child, it's a bit fucked the father wouldn't expect to have a say in it. I'm thrilled he decided to keep this sweet child.

Wow, he said she said. I really hope he isn't pulling a fast one, knowing that a story like this would bring him support. I don't want her to be back peddling, either. I mean don't you have conversations about this while you're pregnant? I know we did even though our risk was super low. It doesn't even sound like there was any discussion about it after the fact, at least not that they are admitting to. No "we had a long conversation about what to do, for days, as a couple" nothing. I mean in one case, she's an evil cunt and he's the hero, in the other she's the victim and he's exploiting their son. I don't like either of those man. But no one asked me.
