TL; DR: Everett Dylan was born on 5/5/16 at 4:01 p.m. after being induced at 39 weeks due to gestational diabetes. He weighed 8lbs 13oz and was 22 inches long. His head was a little bigger than DS’ at 14 ½ inches. Labor was about 20 hours long and was semi-med free and I pushed him out without an epidural.
Here's my very long birth story.
Here's my very long birth story.
{Birth Story.}
The morning of the 4th I was told to call the birthing center at 6:00 AM to see when I could go in to start the induction process. Needless to say I didn’t sleep much that night, due to nerves and anticipation. Around 5:30 I got up and tried to waste some time before I called in. At 6:00 I gave them a call and was immediately told there were no rooms available and to call back in 3 hours at 9:00. After being disappointed I decided to get some more sleep, it was only an hour but I felt a lot better. I called again at 9:00 and I was told there was still no more rooms and to call back at noon and I was thanked for my patience. I got off the phone and started having a meltdown. I was already overwhelmed with this situation and I got very discouraged with how the day was going to turn out.Around 11:00 the nurse called me back to tell me, they were trying to get more staff to come in and was hopeful I could go in around 3:00, but to call back around 2:00 for more information. I didn’t get a chance to call her because she called me at 1:45 and told me to come on in at 3:30 for my induction. Things were starting to get real now that we had a set time to go in.
We arrived at the hospital and there was a line at check in. Another couple was checking in right before us. The lady checking us in told us our room wasn’t available yet and we would have to sit in the waiting room until they had a room ready for us. About an hour later she checked us in and told us our room was almost ready. While we continued to wait 2 pregnant ladies got checked in. About another hour later my husband went to the desk to see how much longer we were going to have to wait. At this point I was starting to have another breakdown after I heard the lady tell him it was going to be another hour. I went to the bathroom because I didn’t want to make a huge scene. My husband called me about 10 minutes later and told me he talked to a nurse who apologized and told us we would have a room in 15-20 minutes and that they had to give our room away 3 times. I headed upstairs to the birthing center and that’s when I noticed the cramps and contractions I was having the last 2 ½ hours during our wait were coming closer together.
We finally got into our room at 5:50 and had 10 minutes before room service ended to order food. Baby was super active, so we had to wait about an hour to start the induction because they needed a baseline HR. The doctor checked me and I was 3cm and 40% effaced which was great change from 2 days before when I was a “fingertip” dilated and 20 % effaced. She told me I was contracting every 5 minutes already, but gave me some misoprostol to help get the process going and to help with effacement.
Contractions became coming consistently every 2-3 minutes, but they were very manageable and I wasn’t in much pain at all. Around 12:30 they checked me again and I was still only 3 maybe 4cm dilated. The contractions were still coming consistently and still manageable so I made the decision to try to rest before starting Pitocin. The contractions weren’t bad but I had issues resting because they were slightly annoying. So about and 2 hours later I got a morphine shot that knocked me out for about 4 hours.
Around 6:20 I felt a small trickle of liquid when I turned on my side. I told the nurse she checked it out and it was positive for amniotic fluid. I was GBS positive so they started antibiotics at 7:00. We ate breakfast and made the decision not to get Pitocin because it seemed like my body was doing well contracting on its own. I had more antibiotics at 11:00 ate a small lunch and got checked at noon. I was 7cm dilated and 80% effaced. At this point I was still doing well and the contractions were getting a little more painful. Around 2/2:30, I started getting a few painful contractions, but they weren’t consistent yet. I had already made it this far without an epidural, (I never intended to have a natural birth without an epidural).
I asked for them to check me again around 3:30 because I felt like I had to poop, but I had a feeling he was still high up. The midwife told me I was at 9cm and my waters were bulging. Apparently my water hadn’t broken completely earlier it was just leaking. I changed positions laying on my right side and had a couple painful contractions. I changed my breathing and felt relief and then intense pressure pain as my water broke everywhere. It seemed like everything happened so fast and slow at the same time. She mentioned the only thing keeping the baby at -3 station was my water so I was prepared for the pressure to start, but also was in denial because at this part with DS I had to keep pushing for 5 hours with vacuum assistance to get him out. This part of labor was completely different because I could feel everything and was trying so hard to get him out as quickly and safely as possible. I had a few contractions and I felt so much pressure as I was pushing and it seemed like I was making good progress. The contraction got even worse and I felt constant pressure and had a feeling his head was almost out, but it had only been about 7-8minutes after my water broke so I didn’t believe it. This was the point I started freaking out and announced I couldn’t do it. I wasn’t aware his head was completely out and I just had to push the rest of him out with the next contraction. After regulating my breathing I pushed a few more times and he was out. DH cut his cord after it stopped pulsing and we did some skin to skin and he breast fed right away. I had a couple nicks, but I didn’t need any stitches. I pushed a total of 25 minutes, a lot less pushing than I did with DS. I still cannot believe I didn’t have an epidural and my recovery has been so much better this time around. We are now home, and trying to handle life with two little boys.
