FWIW I know a 4 year old who's consistently gone by Robert and it's worked. No NN needed. I'm a fan of Rob. I generally don't like initial NNs, but if that's what you love, go for it. Or MN Robert.
I don't like most of the nicknames for Robert either. Rob is okay I guess. Do not like Bert/Bertie. I agree with others that it might be a better idea to put as a placeholder in the MN spot for now.

We are using it for a middle name for the same reasons! It's my dad's name and it's H's late grandfather so it works perfect to honor both sides. My dad goes by Rob, H's grandfather went by Bob. I think that would work best as a middle for you as well. And yes, Bert immediately reminds me of Sesame Street. My friend just named her son Ernest (Ernie) and it's all I can think of.
Friends of mine named their son Robert last year. I remember doing a head tilt to it. Not because it's a bad name, but it just seemed so formal and firmly 50 year old man-ish to me. But hey - times change! I'm the weirdo - not them.
If you don't like the nicknames (which I don't either) and feel that Robert is too much, then I'd say it makes a great candidate for a middle name!
I would also middle name it. I very much believe if there is a nn, especially if it's a common nn, that you hate not to use the name. I know you don't have to call them by that name. They may avoid the nn growing up, but if his buddies in the locker room start calling him Bobbie it might stick. I know not everybody agrees, but that is my thought when making a list.
MN - it's also a family name for me and I've always planned to put it in the MN spot - although I think it's a nice and underused name and certainly would not side eye it

I know a number of Roberts that go by Robert, but they're all adults and so e I know went by a nickname as a kid. I agree it sounds very formal. It's a nice name, but I'd middle name it.
Mn it. Bert is so, so bad. RJ could be the nicest boy in the world and his name would still sound like a d-bag. Robbie is fine, or Bobbie for a little boy. But really, use the full name or mn that.
My husband is Robert. His whole family calls him Robert, all his friends/co-workers/myself call him Rob, and he has extended family who calls him RJ (Robert John).

If I named a son Robert, I'd go with Rob as a nickname. But my great-grandfather's name was Robert Bert (yes, that was his actual name) so I have a soft spot for Bert as a nickname. My cousin was named just Bert after my great-grandfather.
I think Bert is different and refreshing. There won't be a whole bunch of little Berts running around. I didn't even consider the connection with Sesame Street, but then I think of my great-grandfather first.
