Has anyone used Milkie's milk savers? Yesterday at the LC she had me topless so she used a specimen cup to catch the let down from the non-occupied boob. I collected over an ounce and that just seems like a huge waste so I'd like a handsfree way to catch it.
I bought one after I gave birth to DS. I collected a lot of extra milk that way. It is just fore milk so you will have to mix it with pumped milk.
Anyone have any keys to getting rid of milk blisters. It's gotten slightly better as she isn't nursing constantly but they still come back each time. I have lanolin and apno cream and the soothie things. But maybe our latch is off.

I saw a good article on kellymom.com about treating milk blisters. I'd post a link but I'm on mobile. Also, when in doubt ask an LC or your OB. They should be the most helpful.
Resurrecting this thread. So my milk started coming in last night. My boobs are about to explode and hurt. I'm not supposed to pump right? I don't want an oversupply. But he is already eating a lot and they are still engorged. Do I just ride it out?

microworm, my understanding is it's best to ride it out... Cool compresses and a tight-fitting bra help. It should self-regulate in a couple of days. I only had one really bad day.

I rode it out and it only lasted about two days. But in the meantime I took a warm shower, they both sprung leaks in there and I felt a little better after.

I am riding it out but sanitized all pump parts just to be ready. LO is done eating after 10 mins and I can only ever get him to eat on one side per feeding now that my milk is in. I'm thinking I must be producing a lot as he's happy and sleepy after. I'm having the hardest time getting him to wake up to eat though every 2-3 hours. He's been consistently pushing 4 and it worries me. He's only 4 days old and not back to birth weight yet and has about 3-4 ounces to go. I need him to wake up and nurse!!! I hate all of the worrying in the beginning.

This sounds like my LO. But he seems satisfied and is having plenty of wet and dirty diapers so I'm not worrying. My boobs just hurt dammit!
For how long do your LO BF each session? Phoe.nix does on avarage 40-50min total each feed...is that about same as you guys?
Both my kids have been what I call "efficient" nursers. Rarely do they nurse more than 10-12 min... But they drain the boob.
The time spans are going to vary widely, just based on baby.
If you're worried about Intake can you borrow an infant scale and do a few weighted feeds?
First time nurser here.... Do you have to wait till after the engorgement period is over to know if they drain the boob? Or is there a way I can tell during this time?

My understanding, mymilkshake, is that they won't drain it during engorgement. They'll take enough that you feel better... You should be able to tell that you're less painful and engorged. They'll eat till they are happy which begins the regulation... at least I think so!
I was actually told to pump to comfort by my LC, which worked for me and everything regulated and I don't have an oversupply now. I was nervous, but I would just pump to comfort or pump the other side she didn't eat from a bit.
txmommy14 when you pumped, how did you know how long to pump each boob? Or did you just do it till you were comfortable?
It was just until I was comfortable or to relieve some pressure (a few minutes). I was nervous about oversupply and did the whole hot compress/pump a bit and feed/ice packs for swelling. It did work quite well. Now I pump once a day just to build a stash and it's working great.

I tried to ride it out but LO would not latch at all on the left side (the more engorged side). I broke down and pumped like an ounce so that she could latch which thankfully worked. I had to do that 2-3 times 2 days after we were home from the hospital and then I regulated enough to where. I wasn't in extreme pain and she was eating from both sides. The pedi said that with 2nd babies your milk comes in faster usually and they are still tiny and might not be able to keep up with it. If I were you I would pump Uist a little to relieve some of the pressure especially if it's your second baby. The pain stopped for me in like 2-3 days. Motrin was also helpful for the discomfort.

I could've written this post, we're in the same boat for the most part. LO will cluster feed for a couple hours and then really wants to go 4 at a time the rest of the day. I really would prefer to stick with the never wake a sleeping baby theory but he's not back at birth weight quite yet. It's hard.

I have been using reverse pressure softening to help with the latch on my left side, which tends to get engorged when baby goes longer stretches overnight (4 hours - YAY I LOVE THIS!). I learned about it on Kellymom: kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/rev_pressure_soft_cotterman/
Of course he's a month old so he'll drain the breast without much difficulty even when it's engorged, as long as he can establish a good latch, so this is different from that engorgement when you're milk first comes in. I'm definitely not dealing with an oversupply issue. But it may be something to try if your LO doesn't latch well.

For those who are pumping to get a stash and nursing - have you noticed a decrease in how much you're pumping? I was getting up to 4 oz per side up until recently when it's closer to 2 maybe 3. Tell me my body is just regulating and I'm not losing supply.

I didn't really know there was a name for this, but I have been doing this as well. It definitely helps him latch better during this engorgement period.

I'm pretty sure pumping output isn't always a great indicator of supply. I get a lot more in the morning than evening and more if I've been hydrated and rested (ha). And I'm only getting about one oz between the two sides!

It really depends on the day for me and how much she nurses before I pumped. Unless you're noticing your LO having issues getting enough, I'd say you're fine.

Keep in mind your LO may be nursing and "taking" more - so you're pumping less bc your body is regulating. Try not to worry. Skin to skin, lots of water!
When is everyone doing first bottle? We did it at 2 weeks with DS and never had any issues but I was planning to wait until 3-4 weeks this time since we've had some latch issues. However, now my supply is running low and I may want to up my pumping game to up my supply, so I may do one earlier.
We have already done one and she's only 4 days old. She goes really long stretches and my milk is coming in fierce this time so I've had some pain. Yesterday I had to pump and shortly after she wanted to eat so I had DH fees her the bottle. She did really well. I noticed she had a bit of trouble nursing the next time though but that was because again I was so full it was hard to latch. I feel terrible because she's always choking. I try different ways and laying back. Anyone else have this issue? Also I'm late to the game so maybe it's been discussed.

Just saw this so it has been talked about. I asked the LC this question at the hospital because I had a strong let down and produced a lot last time and had mastitis twice. She said as long as you're pumping for comfort it will be fine. That's what I've been doing and then just combining them when I get enough.
