Birth story!
I woke up on Saturday around 9 am to go to the bathroom; I felt an odd pop and it occurred to me that it might be my water breaking, but then nothing happened so I went back to bed. When I got up again not so long afterwards, that is when I got the big gush. Definitely no mistaking what it was. I called in and the doctor on call said that if I wasn't contracting, I could wait as late as 5 pm to come in and they'd start meds if necessary.
Contractions started around 10am, they were 3-5 minutes apart, around 45-60 seconds long, but not overly painful. The contractions slowed down a little as the day went on and got progressively more uncomfortable. Eventually it got to the point where I couldn't get up and walk around at all without triggering one. I was getting huge gushes of fluid on a regular basis. My giant pads were no match, so I went through a few outfits before I just started sitting on towels.
DH hadn't packed, so he took care of putting in the car seat and packing a bag, and even managed a nap. At 5, we headed over to the hospital. I got all checked in and the nurse immediately asked if I wanted an epidural. I had originally planned to wait a bit so I could be mobile for awhile. But since I had a contraction everytime I tried to move, I wasn't mobile anyway so I accepted. It wasn't long, and getting the actual epi hurt a lot less than I expected. Going from strong contractions to nothing was pretty nice.
I was only dilated to 4, so I just hung out. My mom came by and we watched a Jaws marathon on TV (Jaws is my favorite movie, serendipity!) I was rechecked around 10pm and I was at 9 centimeters. I figured the last centimeter wouldn't take too long and I actually wondered if I would have a June 4th or 5th baby. But I ended up falling asleep for a few hours. The pain would periodically get bad again, which seemed to be dependent on which side I was lying on. I guess epidurals rely on gravity, so rolling over helped, and I had a little button I could press for extra doses when I wanted.
They rechecked me around 3am and it was time for pushing. The doctor estimated it would only be about an hour and he was pretty much right. Pushing was freaking hard! I was exhausted right away, even with all the rest I'd gotten. I'll have to get in better shape for the next baby! I was really numb so it took a little while for me to get the hang of how to push. The nurse was awesome and DH was a good coach, though he looked incredibly worried through the whole thing. Which was alternately hilarious and a little concerning to be staring up at
Baby was born vaginally at 4:01 am. We did skin to skin right away and DH surprised me by cutting the cord.
TL; DR
