Are any of you doing valentines for your LOs "friends"? I'm thinking about doing a little something (not fancy) for his class, but the center hasn't said anything for or against valentines. I thought about doing a little sucker with those cheesy but awesome little kid cards. Silly at this age?
Our center does a party for the kids, but no valentines at this age. I honestly don't even know how many kids are in her class! The only thing I'd be concerned with about giving things with food at this age is not knowing about allergies, or if a parent doesn't want their kid to have candy... If the teachers had to take it away from a kid they'd probably pitch a fit. But cards would be cute.
DD isn't in daycare, but if she were I'd do Valentines for the kids. I enjoy doing stuff like that and would probably do small packs of goldfish with cards or something like that. Edit typo
Mom fail? Doing valentines for LO's class never occurred to me. I have not heard anything from daycare about a party or anything either. So no, no plans to do it but it does sound cute.
I don't have LO in preschool, however, my older girls don't even get a valentines day party. They have a spring party next month. I believe they are allowed to hand out valentines this year if they want to. I am making cute little ones I saw on Pinterest. One has bubbles and a saying along the lines if you blow me away valentine. The other one chose play dough and it have a saying also. We are not allowed to give candy out and the nurse checks every single bag for candy. So as much as I would rather grab a cheap box of cards and tape a sucker or something I can't.
I don't think we'll be doing anything. I don't even know how many kids are at DS's daycare. As a mom of a LO with food allergies, I hope that he doesn't receive anything edible since he probably can't have it anyway.
FFMC: I don't see why valentine's have to have treats with them. I'm about to sound 90 years old but when I was growing up just the actual valentine was enough. We didn't need lolipops or goldfish or candy. Am I being a ridiculous scrooge by thinking we should keep it simple?

This was what we did too. I remember "fighting" with my mom because all the cool kids had candy attached to theirs. I think the reason i started doing my own was the boxes generally have 24-48 valentines and cost like $5+, my girls had like 10-12 kids in the class so I threw away so many that we didn't use. I spend a little bit more making my own but I typically get the parts at the $1 store so it's not that bad.
No RiseAndWine I don't think you're being a scrooge. I will admit I loved getting candy at Valentine's day from my classmates because my mom didn't buy us candy often. So Halloween and Valentine's day were it for us. (Our easter baskets would have a little candy, but mostly "stuff")
Having said that, I definitely am reconsidering given the food allergy thing (which I hadn't thought about with candy).
This is the first year we did them for DD2. I picked up a pack of Valentine bags for a couple bucks and a 15 pk of 1 ounce playdough in Valentine colors for $6. She used leftover cards from her sister a few years ago.

I feel the same, actually. I kinda think that my DC's Valentine's party sounds like a recipe for disaster - 15 sets of parents all bringing in "red" themed treats? How much sugar is my kid going to end up with? And we actually try to limit his refined sugar intake-not to say he doesn't get any, but he prefers fruit right now and we're trying to keep it that way for as long as we reasonably can. I'm also not really sure whether these treats are meant to be eaten at the party or to be taken home either :-( Damn it, guess I'd better ask tomorrow, because I was just going to send a bowl of strawberries.
I do love me some cheesy kids valentines cards though. If I had more time, I was totally going to make some Minion themed ones!
We're sending in valentines that have a sticker as the 'treat.' Honestly, they're left over from last year, when we gave them to the other infants in her class.... We did get little heart boxes of chocolates for her 'teachers.'

They certainly don't have to. A Valentine card by itself is certainly perfectly fine, especially at this young age.
I admit I tend to "overdo it" when it comes to things like this. If I'm being totally honest, I could easily see myself doing a whole goody bag with a card, candy, a savory snack, stickers, and bubbles or something. I have a problem. : \
R's class sent out a specific letter. His class is small (11 kids total) so it had everyone's name, a list of acceptable treats and asked for them to bring in a card for each kid and a shoebox. They will be decorating the shoe box this week as their art project and it's where the valentines will go. I remembered the shoe box but I haven't gotten valentines yet. Is it just me or are they hard to find? I went to target and they had a few hello kitty and one TMNT but they looked stupid. I'm not about to make anything this year though because I'm lazy.

Our CVS had about 10 types to pick from. The set Buddy picked had a dinosaur, robot, monkey and something else, they were cute. Better buy them soon, CVS was already consolidating the Valentines candy to make room for the Easter stuff. But as a bonus, you can pick up the Reese's eggs while you're there ;-)
A isn't in daycare right now but I love holidays and celebrations so I would definitely bring something in. I know many places have rules over what you can bring. When my boys were in school we used to do something for every holiday and the end of the year. Valentine's day would usually be a card and a mini treat bag. I was always afraid of leaving someone out so we would send a few extras in case a new kid was there.
At home we actually have had our Valentine's decorations up for a while and my Easter stuff is ready to go.
cnj j am just like you. I try to be the overachiever mom. Then unusually end up mad and cussing about whatever it is I'm trying to do.
I'm truly LOLing at that one. Sounds familiar. When I heard daycare wanted "red treats" for V-day, at first I was going get watermelon and use cookie cutters to cut out heart shapes and cute it up. And then I remembered that the last time I did something like that, I made a mess, it took 3 times as long, and Bud wouldn't even eat it. That's why I settled on just buying some damn strawberries to send in.
(and then I got on pinterest and found these really cute jello cup love bugs and my conviction wavered)
Here is my Pinterest valentines for my preschooler. I bought $1 store packs of play dough and printed off a free tag and had her write her name. Then I put it all in a valentine ziplock bag also from the $1 store. And it won't load the picture.
Ugh!!! Daycare JUST sent info about bringing valentines and a decorated box home today and the party is Friday. To top it off I am a single mom starting tomorrow since DH will be going out of town for work.
Ha, our daycare just sent the class list home yesterday too, if we want to bring valentines or candy for the class. I was planning on making treat bags for the teachers, so I was just going to do that for the kids too, but I don't want to overload them with junk.... Maybe I'll have lo color on some paper and cut them into hearts instead. I don't want to go buy more stuff!
@jacks605 I'll admit we are doing valentines (bought from rite aid, so not nearly as cool as sudokufan or cnj!), but the thought of doing a box for DS at this age seems crazy. If anyone else in his class chooses to bring cards, I'll tell his teachers to put them in the plastic bag I'm taking everyone's cards in.
I printed off little tags that say Valentine, youre my main squeeze and then attached them to the little apple sauce squeeze pouches.. I prob over did it but I didnt bring in anything last year so I felt I had to make up for it. I hope the kids like them.
