Do you let your garden go in the winter or keep it up?

We have to rebuild every spring. I went in the backyard and explore the state of it.... and I just want it to be spring already. We have had mild weather this winter in the PNW and things are starting to bud. I have alot of clean up to do. I need to trim back some of the plants. The rain pushes the soil down so we have had to replenish the soil in all of our beds. The weeds take over the couple patches of grass we have and the 2 stone patios I have to weed. I also need to restring my fences and antidog cages. But it is still too chilly to work in the rain. We will be starting some seeds indoors today. 

What do you do?

We let it go. I normally don't even cut back dead foliage in the fall. I try to get out over St. Patrick's day and start amending soil to get early season veggies in

We let it go and till on warm days closer to spring and add in compost. I'm bad about weeding, even during growing season!

My yard and garden look like hell in the winter months! Right now, peeking out the window, I can see an empty vodka bottle that some delightful person threw over my fence last night; that is just adding to the beauty of it.

I will prune back my blueberries soon and in the next month or so we will get some new soil to top off our raised garden beds. Our entire backyard just went completely to weeds last year(thankfully it is all fenced in so no one can see) so that will be the main project in the coming months.

Off to go pick up that bottle...

Samesies.  Mine are under about three feet of snow.  Once I am able to, I turn the soil and remulch where needed, and pull any weed sprouts.  I do all the cutting back in the fall so that there is minimal work in the spring.

I'm in the same boat... though we over winter carrots in our garden, so I dig down into the snow every months to pull out a big batch.

Itching to get into the soil though... months and months away

Let it go. My dh takes over the backyard in the winter splitting and stacking wood for the next winter. As long as its cleaned up by spring, he can make as big a mess as he wants.

I clean it up in the fall and cover it in leave and veggie peelings. Then over winter I add veggie peelings and mix it all in (if it hasn't decomposed) in the soil in the spring, let it sit a bit and then plant. There is always some stuff to do in spring to get it started. I do add some soil as I have clay and have slowly been trying to get it more loose and rich.... been a long slow process though.

Let it go. With snow and frozen ground it makes it hard to do anything. I will cut back some things before the Spring thaw but that's about it. My yard is currently half mud/snow, half packed snow/ice. Wee!! I thought I was going to fall on my ass this morning feeding the piggy birds!

We are guilty of letting it go, which is bad because we have bermudagrass problems. If you've ever dealt with it, you know it doesn't die. Great for your lawn, bad for your garden.

Let it go. We get lots of snow so there's not really any other option. I do cut everything back in the late fall first though.
