TL;DR: Baby boy was born 6/22 at 11:29pm. 6lbs13oz, 20.5in, at 39w5d after a very quick 3.5 hr labor and a very unplanned unmedicated birth.
On Wed June 22nd I had an Ob appt in the morning and I was at 3cm and almost completely effaced. But I had been at this status for a month. We decided to at least schedule an induction for 1 week out, hoping that I didn't need it. The rest of the day was normal and besides some serious lightning crotch and pelvic pressure, I didn't feel like I was going into labor anytime soon.
At about 8pm I was watching TV and I had one semi painful contraction. I had only had painless BH to this point so I made note of it. I had a couple more but they weren't too painful. I still asked MH to come home from his brother's. I started packing my bag because my Dr said this labor would go fast. Boy was he right.
As I was packing I started having contractions 5 min apart but not too painful. I called my Dr and he said if I think I am in labor to head in to the hospital, but that I should be really sure because we were having severe storms. That was so not helpful and made me 2nd guess myself. So I laid down for about 45 min and the contractions tapered off to every 10 min but were getting more painful. I said what the hell they are getting more painful so it's probably labor so my dad came over to watch DS who was already in bed and we were off.
Got to the hospital shortly before 11pm and was brought to labor and delivery for monitoring. Contractions were pretty painful but not as bad as I remembered so I thought I had plenty of time for an epidural and so did the nurses. Laid down and was answering what seemed like a million intake questions when, pop, my water broke. The next contraction was so unbearable and I felt such pressure. I screamed to get that damn epidural ready. They farted around and decided they should check me first. The first nurse checked me and seemed confused so she called in a second to "check her work." Well the reason she was confused was because I was completely dilated. They didnt think I was that far along because I wasn't acting like I was in pain - I had told them I was at a pain level of 6 when I got there. But after my water broke that pain level went way up.
Then they tried to get an IV in me and had me lie on my side. The next contraction felt like he was starting to come out. I grabbed onto the rail while they screamed at me not to push. MH said I kept screaming "it's coming out!" But I'm pretty sure I said "he." They made me force myself not to push through maybe 3 more of those contractions while they fiddled with the IV and called in the hospital Dr on staff.
The Dr arrived shortly and said I could push. Totally felt that ring of fire that I never, ever wanted to experience. Pushed through the start of a contraction and his head was out. Took a breath and pushed through the end of that contraction and he was all out at 11:29pm, just about 3.5 hrs from onset of labor and a half hour after getting to the hospital. It was insane. I still can't believe it.
I do wonder if my Dr hadn't made me 2nd guess myself and I went in earlier how it all would have played out. But it worked out in the end so I am happy. Baby boy had great Apgar scores (9s) and cried immediately. They delayed cord clamping and then MH got to cut the cord. He didn't get to do that last time because DS1 was a bit of an emergency situation with the cord around his neck. DS2 looks very similar to his older brother, but 1 lb smaller. He seems very tiny to me though. He nursed upon going skin to skin. My bleeding was a bit concerning so they put me on pitocin and gave me some other shot in my thigh. Finally it was getting better and the nurse said that's good because the next thing they would try would be administered anally. Uh no thanks. Didn't get any sleep that night because of the pitocin. But my recovery has been great. Much easier than last time. Days later I'm still in shock of it all and am absolutely in love with my new little guy!
