I've noticed that a few of us are working from home, and I thought it would be nice to have a check-in. Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? What do you do (line of work)? - if you are comfortable saying. How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) Any tips for how to balance everything? What are your biggest challenges? Other?

I'm WFH part-time for this semester only. I'm a professor. I'm teaching two online classes and one night class this semester. I've been working while LO naps (if I can put him down) and after my husband gets home. My MIL could theoretically help while she's here, but that's not really happening. No tips from me. This is HARD! My biggest challenge is finding time and energy to work. I have time while my child is sleeping on top of me, but it's hard to work while my child is sleeping on top of me! By the time my husband gets home, I'm drained and I don't have the energy or concentration to work. Plus, I want to visit with him and have adult conversation. Other: I'm so grateful that I can be home with LO for a while longer, but this is more challenging than I thought.
My work situation is slightly different but I DO work from home so I'll answer.
Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent?
Permanent
What do you do (line of work)? -
I do the accounts payable for my husband's business
How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) I work during naps and when H gets home (but it still seems like I go days without getting anything done)
Any tips for how to balance everything? Ugh, no tips. It's hard. We are significantly busier this year than we were last year. Our only other employee we had before LO was born quit the day we came home from the hospital. (Yeah thanks asshole). So H had to interview and hire someone and now train them between business trips. He is basically only home for lunch and dinner. Sometimes he's home for a few hours in a row. That through off our planned schedule of each of us taking a 'shift' with the baby while the other one works.
What are your biggest challenges? The problem is this isn't my only job. I am a hairstylist at a very busy salon. I am going back to work 3 days a week starting on Wednesday. It's going to be even harder to work. LOs naps are so unpredictable too. Plus there's laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. H tries to help whenever he can but he is so busy. Cannot wait until these projects get pushed through and all he has to do is train his engineer. Once that happens, the engineer will be able to go out in all the trips and H can concentrate on the other projects.
Other? Good luck? Anyone have a magic trick for this to work?
Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? I work part time from home and part time from the office. It will permanently be this way.
What do you do (line of work)? I work in IT.
How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) At the moment family is taking care of him part of the time and the other part I work during naps.
Any tips for how to balance everything? Nope, it is hard.
What are your biggest challenges? We will see. I am just starting the work from home schedule this week. Previously I have been working full time in the office.

WFH temporary or permanent?
Permanent
What do you do?
I'm a designer and blogger.
How do you manage with LO?
My LO wakes up for his morning feeding around 6:30 or 7. When he's done I typical can get him back to sleep for a couple of hours. It's like a mad dash for me, coffee/breakfast/blog. The blog and my social media accounts are the only things I can do relatively successfully alone. Sewing and sketching have to happen when DH gets home.
Tips for balancing everything?
Nope! Although I strangely feel that in the long run I'm going to wind up being a multitasking machine.
Biggest challenges?
When I'm 'momming' I'm frustrated at the lack of work getting done and therefor my attention isn't entirely on LO. When I'm working, I feel guilty, like I'm not doing enough 'mom' things for him and my attention isn't on my work. Trying to sort it all out. All I'm sure of is that single moms (my mom was one) are super humans with super powers. God bless them.
Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? It'll be permanent for 2 days a week. I'll go into the office 3 days a week.
What do you do (line of work)? - if you are comfortable saying. I train/lead a team of customer service/account managers. When we don't have new hires it's a lot of reporting/monitoring and trouble shooting.
How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) We'll have a nursing student come in to care for her on my WFH days for 5 hours a day. I'm hoping it works out and the last three hours online I can juggle both. I'm also hoping my H comes home earlier on my WFH days to cover too. We'll see.
Any tips for how to balance everything? Uh, I have no clue. I'm going to hide in a walk in closet during naps. I'm going to wear headphones and ear plugs. I'm going to try to ignore LO and the sitter as much as possible.

Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? Permanent. I've been working from home/traveling one week a month for the last 2 years. When o go back in March, the regular travel stops. What do you do (line of work)? - IT How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) BIL is a SAHD who will take lo a few hours a day. I work EST and live in PST so Dh can handle early am's Any tips for how to balance everything? Will let you know next month What are your biggest challenges? I have a side business that I still manage the communication aspect of right now and I find just answering emails can be a chore. I try to answer emails whenever im pumping. Other?
I WFH permanently. My team is based on the west coast and I'm on the east.
I work in sustainable & responsible investing.
LO will be in daycare when I go back next month. He'll go to the same center as his older brother.
I don't think I have any tips that you haven't already heard! Honestly, I don't know how people WFH without childcare. I would have a very hard time balancing that. But in general, what works well for me is to have a designated space just for work - I don't pay bills there, I don't talk to DH, I don't dick around online. Not to say that i don't sometimes do those things during working hours, but I make myself leave my workspace. It just ensures that it feels like my office and not an extension of my house.
My biggest challenge is that I feel pressure (from myself) to accomplish both work-related and home-related tasks during the day. If I worked in an office I wouldn't be mad at myself for not getting laundry done during the day! So I need to appreciate the opportunity to accomplish small things without being mad that I have to, you know, work all day....
Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? - Prior to LO, I went into the office M-F. We do have the flexibility to WFH and conference call, but I much prefer the human interaction with my colleagues. I spend waaay to much time on the phone as it is. I may have to start taking advantage of the WFH flexibility.
What do you do (line of work)? - health care related IT
How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) - Baby will be going to an in-home day care
Any tips for how to balance everything? - FTM so I'm going to be looking for tips.
What are your biggest challenges? - I am not a morning person - just can't get going. Driving in this crazy city traffic, I'm paranoid about accidents.
I've noticed that a few of us are working from home, and I thought it would be nice to have a check-in.
Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? Permanent 3-4 days per week typically
What do you do (line of work)? - if you are comfortable saying. Healthcare/public health consulting and project work
How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) We have a nanny come in 5-6 hours per day and I work early in the morning while lo is sleeping
Any tips for how to balance everything? Nope still struggling to find a good balance What are your biggest challenges? Hearing lo cry during the day and not being able to go to him is torture
Other? Great idea! Hopefully we can all learn from each other!
Is WFH temporary (during mat leave) or more permanent? I've been WFH since the day I got home from the hospital. I will start back part time (9-2) in March. I didn't have much of a mat leave What do you do (line of work)? - if you are comfortable saying. Marketing/HR for the family business How do you manage with LO? (In-home care, daycare, work during naps, etc.) I work during naps and when H gets home. He also works in the family business so he takes the baby and tells me what I need to do when he gets home. Photoshop is freakin' hard with an awake baby. Any tips for how to balance everything? I bought a little bouncer that I can sit on my coffee table with my laptop and I sit Indian style on the floor and that has helped for awake time. Other than that, it's a mad dash to get it all done while she is napping.
What are your biggest challenges? Keeping the house clean!! I swear everything I do gets undone in an hour.
millm0m I had to work right when I got out of the hospital, too. I was so out of it though. Last year our business was busy, but manageable. This year is just.so.busy. Obviously it's very good to be this busy, but so hard to balance it all!

I WFH right when I got home from the hospital too! I was able to switch all my face-to-face classes to online for the last few weeks. It helped me save my sick leave (no mat leave for me), but it was difficult to say the least.
millm0m yup, we were busy too, plus it was the end of the year and having to deal with that. April-August is our busiest season so I'm anxious to see how it pans out. My mom will have LO while I work so that will help. All my IRL friends think I have it made in the shade WFH...no way Jose!
