I asked my RE about this and he said it's completely fine to fly, which is what I've seen most places. My best friend's OB told her not to fly in her first trimester. I just don't see the justification for that.
Do you mean the pat down vs the whole body scanner?
If so, I talked to my DH about this bc last time we flew I saw a very pregnant lady going through the whole body scanner and made a comment of "whoa really?"
His response, seeing as how he had literally just walked out of his radiology rotation for medical school and straight to the airport to catch our flight was: "Actually we were discussing it this week with the radiology attending and the amount of radiation you get from the WBSs is infinitely smaller than the amount you get from sitting on a plane for the duration of your flight and there is no scientific evidence / research that says a WBS radiation is remotely harmful to your fetus. So go through the damn scanner and don't waste your time doing a pat down."
When I fly pregnant, I go in the metal detector, not the other thing (I don't even know what that thing is called). I also get my hands swabbed. I'm completely comfortable with this, as is my OB. Just tell the TSA you're pregnant.

Thank you ladies and sorry unclear.... Specifically referring to the scanners. I don't know that Newark gives you the metal detector option anymore at pre-check so ... Pat down it is.
I've done both. When I remember to put in my TSA precheck stuff, it doesn't matter because they just have a metal detector at all the ones I've been through.
I flew weekly for work when I was pregnant with DD from weeks 4-30. I did the scan and my OB said it was fine. It's totally personal preference based on what you are comfortable with.

I flew a few times when pregnant (1st and 2nd tri) with DS and I opted for pat down instead of the scan. When I was flying a lot more frequently, I opted out of the scan probably 75% of the time anyway so it was no big deal to me to ask for the pat down when I was pregnant.

Late to this, but I'd opt for the metal detector. Nowadays when I fly I'm wearing a toddler and they have opened up a detector line just for me even if everyone else was going through the scanner.
It doesn't have to do with the radiation so much as my personal opinions about the scanners, though.

Last time I was in EWR they had both. It has been a little while, but I definitely remember both.

The EWR pre check lines use the metal detector, unless you set it off, then they send you to the scanner 😊 ended up being a total non event.
PepperPottsJ!!! CONGRATS!!!! I totally missed this!!!
And, since I'm here, I went through the X-ray machine and that camera swinging around machine a few times in 1st trimester. My kid isn't mutated. I don't think.
