I thought it might be helpful to have a post about all the things that took you by surprise last time during your labour or recovery. I keep remembering stuff from last time and how I wish I'd been told! Feel free to add anything I'm sure a lot of this has been discussed but I'm pro anything that helps to prepare - I'm sure there will be lots of 'Ohhhh I forgot about that!' moments for us S+TMs also!
- Day 3 post delivery is a crazy crazy time. My midwife called it the 'water day' because your milk comes in, you're still super bloated and swollen, and you cryyyyy about everything. All of that was true for me.
- Speaking of milk coming in, holy moly porn star boobs. They actually feel like bowling balls and it is the most uncomfortable thing, but it passes fast.
- Night sweats. This one no one told me about and I thought I was just gross. For the few first weeks I was soooo sweaty at night. I would wake up soaked, I ended up sleeping on a towel it was so bad!
- Not everyone feels an amazing instant rush of love at first sight. DDs birth was a little traumatic and though I instantly felt fiercely protective of her, I definitely didn't get that crazy head-over-heels love that some mothers talk about. It actually took several weeks, until she could smile and show a little responsiveness and personality, for me to get that feeling. After speaking with lots of other mothers I realise this isn't that unusual after all.
- Breastfeeding a newborn takes foreverrrr. Honestly, a feed could take 40 minutes sometimes.
I'll add more as I think of them!
