I've been MIA the last few days, but I had my baby! Here's his birth story:
At exactly 12am on 7/27, as I was laying down to fall asleep, I started to feel a warm rush of liquid. I ran to the bathroom and had a big gush in the toilet. I wasn't sure at first so I cleaned up and walked back to my room. As I was walking I felt another huge gushing and knew my water had broken. Got my mom up and called the hospital who told me to come in. There was so much fluid that I soaked through two hand towels that I shoved in my pants haha.
Contractions started right about when we got to the hospital. They picked up in intensity around 2:30am and since my doula was with another family, her backup doula got there around 3. She was really sweet. I labored in the tub for about an hour. Then just labored in bed for a few hours and intermittently on the birthing ball and toilet. My doula got there around 10:30 am. At this point contractions were super painful and I was rethinking my choice to be med free. I was also frustrated that I had labored so long and so painfully and I barely gained a cm in dilation.
I decided to try some Fentanyl but that just made me feel stoned and didn't really dull contractions at all. At this point I decided to forego my med free plan and get the epidural. They started me on a small dosage of pitocin as well while we waited, which really intensified the even more.
By the time I had the epidural in around 12:30, I was in a lot of pain. OMG the epidural was like heaven. I will be singing its praises for years to come lol. It allowed me to doze on and off for about 3 or 4 hours in the afternoon between checks from the nurse. My doula and mom also napped since we had all been up all night, ha.
Around 4, they turned the pitocin on again and I got dialed to about a 6. Just more waiting and finally at about 7, they said I was finally at 10. I labored down for an hour on my own before they said I was ready to push. I pushed for 2 hours and baby Lachlan was born at 10:13 pm. He weighed 8 lbs, 5 oz and is 21.5 in long.
I have a slight 2nd degree tear but the doc said it wasn't really that bad so that's good. I'm so happy that I decided to do the epidural. I think given that I hadn't slept all night, I just don't think I couldn't have lasted the full labor anyway because I was so exhausted. I also puked a ton, like at least 4 times before pushing and another 4-5 times during pushing!
Also, apparently I had an intact hymen until birth. Lol. How weird is that?
I will post a pic eventually!
