We had our shower last weekend and despite not putting receiving blankets on our registry, we received 10 packages of 4 receiving blankets each! For you STM's, how many will I really need?
Also, any ideas with what to do with the extras? None of them came with gift receipts.

I agree, keep ~10 or so. We did use them in a million different ways (floor mat, burp cloths, carrier or stroller covers, etc) so have a handful to stash in various places was nice. I like the idea of donating the rest if you have no idea where they would have come from (some stores like target or bru will let you return with no receipt for store credit in some cases if you can figure out where they came from). Check your registry too because if people picked them up along with something on your registry sometimes they show up as an additional item on there. I had some very random things show up as ourchased on my target registry from that!
Maybe I'm in the minority but we had 2 and that was fine for us. I used Halo sleep sacks instead of swaddling though, and we had quilts or thicker blankets for when baby was on the floor etc.
I love the idea of donating extras to a woman's shelter. Maybe wash some and keep some in the packages till you see if you need them.

Same here! I think we used the same 2 flannel ones for R over and over. We mainly used them to tuck in the car seat during winter. The flannel ones aren't big enough to swaddle with so unless they are Aden and Anais muslin blankets (we still use 1 for her in the car at almost 19 months old), I'd definitely return almost all of them and buy other things.

Hope your enjoyed the shower!
As a FTM, not sure how many you'll need but I know Target is a good spot to check online for returns. I received some items and found if they carry in store or online they will accept without receipts for store credit. Got some wipes & diapers instead.
We used receiving blankets (especially the muslin ones) for everything...breastfeeding cover, car seat cover, floor mat, couch mat, etc etc. My daughter spit up constantly so I always wanted a barrier between her and the surface of whatever she was on. I think we had 15 total which was great because I wasn't constantly doing laundry.

Man, do people love to give new moms blankets! Seems like they're always one of the most common shower gifts. I think keeping 2 packages would probably be plenty.

I don't remember using them often. We were given a lot of handmade blankets and then a ton of burp cloths. You don't have to make a decision right now. I'd wait until baby comes and see what works for you.

I'd use maybe two packages and store the rest for a little bit and if you dont need more after a few weeks donate them or try and return them if you can figure out where they are from.

We hardly ever used them. The A&A's are much more useful, IMO. You'll find what works for you. You could always cut them up and make some flannel wipes out of them if you end up keeping them all.

I remember going through a ton of blankets daily, both receiving blankets and regular blankets. I liked having some with me wherever we went and I used them for everything: spit up, as a nursing cover, to catch my spray when my boobs were extra full, as a carseat blanket, to swaddle in until she got too big, as a diaper changing mat, and probably other things. But if you think you have too many, take some back. Look online at target, baby's r us, and walmart to see if they carry them and then go in and return them to get a store credit for something you know you need.
We used maybe 2 blankets... But he was born in May and it's hot here. I kept half of the blankets we were given. We might have 10-15. All different types. Receiving blankets are too small to be useful in my book, but they fold small and can be good as a changing may if you need it!
We have probably 8 or so of the Carters receiving blankets that I used to throw on top of things to protect from potential spit up, such as behind me on the couch. I preferred the A&A ones to use when we were out to put over him.

Is A&A worth the money? Or would SwaddleMe muslin blankets be basically the same thing?

I don't know the swaddle me blankets, but the A&A were fantastic as a light blanket. If the swaddle me blankets are the same size, they would probably be comparable. We could only use them as swaddles up until about 6 weeks when DS got strong enough/wiggly enough to break out. We switched to the stretch cotton/ Velcro swaddled at that point and used the A&A for covers only. I liked the A&A size for use as an emergency nursing cover of I needed something, light blanket, cover over the stroller, etc once we were past using them as true swaddles.

LadyNymeria, FYI on swaddling - a number of daycares (particularly those that take state funds) are moving away from full swaddling because of some recent studies. H (who works for an early learning program) says they're pushing now toward the sleep sacks that leave arms out. Save

What jennybeans said. I only had the A&A but I would compare the size. The light material and size is what made them so great. My DS now likes to cuddle his at night and it's a great summer blanket.
I have a huge stack of receiving blankets. I agree they are useless as "blankets" but DS was a power puker so they came in super handy. We probably went through 6 or 7 if not more a day and I did laundry every 2-3 days. Plus, they can be cut up to be used a extra absorbency in cloth diapers if you're doing that.

I made a meme for this, I feel that passionate about it. Basically, you can never have too many. They are excellent burp cloths, swaddle blankets, surface protectors from spit up, pee, and projectile poop. You can never have too many. Take all the ones from the hospital too if you birth in one.
