This is long, so I apologize in advance!
Lucy Laurain was born on Friday, July 22nd at 1:21pm. She weighed 7.13lbs and is 20.5 inches long. Here is her birth story!
We were team green and baby was due 7-17-16. My last day of work was Tuesday the 19th and nothing was happening. I was just mega pregnant. On Wednesday I had an ultrasound and an OB appointment. Ultrasound looked good but baby wasn’t moving around a lot. OB went to check me and said I have a super posterior cervix and basically she had to push really hard and really far to feel for it. It was VERY painful. She couldn’t feel anything and sent me to get an NST. That turned out fine and she wanted to check me again. When she was about to start she noticed blood and realized she had been rough on me (yeah duh, it hurt like a mother f’er) so she tried to check but cervix was so far back she didn’t want to cause further damage.
My tentative induction date was the morning of the 22nd, but because she couldn’t feel my cervix she asked if I wanted to move it back to the 25th to see if things could progress on its own. Also because I would only be 40+5 on the 22nd and technically to be considered a medical induction I have to be at least 40+6 or more. I could be sent home if there weren’t any rooms or if the induction just wasn’t working on me. I opted to stick with Friday because my OB would be at the hospital because it was her rotation day, and because I was ready for this baby to come out.
I spent most of the day Thursday cleaning and getting everything ready and just spending some quality time with my only child for the time being. We were up at 4am Friday morning and made our way to the hospital for our 6am appointment. Once we got settled in and I got strapped up, the monitor told me I was having contractions on my own about every 10 minutes or so. I didn’t think what I was feeling were contractions. A little bit later my OB came to check on me along with my two nurses. She wanted to check my cervix again. It was one of the worst pains I have ever felt. The two nurses had to hold me down while my OB was jamming her arm up in there to try and get a feel. I was maybe 1-2 cm dilated, but it was hard to tell. She gave me the option again to do it on the 25th but she said she was confident that today could be the day as well. We were there and I wasn’t about to go home so she put the orders in to start Pitocin around 8:30am. Contractions started slowly and I was doing alright. The stronger they got the more uncomfortable I got. In order to get my epidural I would have to get checked again so I was just trying to prolong the agony.
By 11:30am I was really hurting so I asked for the epidural. One nurse checked me and said I was about 5-6cm dilated. But I had to get checked by the other nurse as well because the first one was training. She said about a solid 3cm. But with my first, as soon as I got the epidural I went from a 2 to an 8 within the hour so I was hoping that would happen again. They talked to my OB and she gave the OK to get the epidural so now it was just waiting time. The guy finally got there around 12pm and started the process and I was starting to feel better by 12:30pm. A little bit later they checked my cervix again and I was progressing fast. Contractions were coming every few minutes and maybe around 1pm or so I felt a gush and my water had started to break. Over the next 5 minutes I kept feeling gushes, they checked me again and I was fully dilated. They went to get my OB who still wasn’t confident I could deliver vaginally again because of my cervix and my low pelvic bone. My mom showed up around this time and her and my H were chatting and thinking they had plenty of time to get ‘ready’. But my OB checked she said OMG WE ARE GOING TO DELIVER RIGHT NOW! And ran out of the room to get what she needed. I got into the pushing position.
It was a little chaotic because it happened so quickly. They had me do one practice push and just kidding it wasn’t a practice because the head popped out!! They had me take a deep breath and push again and holy cow I birthed a child!! I had never believed how someone could have a baby with only a few pushes but I totally get it now. They immediately set the baby in my arms (completely different from my first). I still didn’t know what it was so my H told me we had a baby girl! Oh man I lost it! I tore a bit but it wasn’t as bad as the first time around and it was the same line so I guess that was a good thing. I was able to start nursing right away and she did a great job. My dad and Mother in Law were in the waiting room and when my H went out to tell them he said they both started crying and cheering! I was feeling pretty good coming off of the epidural and determined to not have as rough of a recovery as my first.
It has almost been two weeks since Lucy has arrived and things have been good. I feel so much better and have been moving around a lot more (having a toddler helped!). I have had some uncomfortable moments but for the most part things have been well. We had some rough days with nursing but things are looking better. My boobs are still sore and get engorged at night but I am working through it. I get about 3-6 hours of broken sleep at night and I am up bright and early with my son. We are still trying to get into a routine and figure things out. It is just difficult when both kids are in need of something and you have to pick one to tend to first and let the other cry for a bit. I am not looking forward to my H going back to work. My mom and sister have helped out a lot by coming over so I am super appreciative of that. We just have to take it day by day and hope for the best!
I hope you are all doing well! I haven’t had much free time to be around but I am hoping that changes soon. I can’t wait to read about everyone else’s birth stories!
