Had an appt with re yesterday to see about trying again . Appt was made a month ago.
Tuesday got an email from cryobank that donor only had 25 vials left
Checked Wednesday there were 23
Checked today there were 15
Last go around we used 1 , have 1 left in storage locally
We need at least one more for the next go around... And 2 per cycle after
How many would you get? They are super expensive and we want 1 more baby...
So much to think about so fast....
Is he still donating or retired? I think that would also factor into my decision. Can you sell back unused vials? I would order at least 3 as a start.
My donor had 10 vials left and I ordered 3. I only used 1 and now still have 2 vials sitting on ice. They were shipped to my local lab so I can't sell them back to the bank. I'm OAD but can't seem to let go of the remaining vials.
He is retired. We have been paying storage locally for the unused 1 for a long time now and it's more $ than storing at cryobank (I think)- and yes they buy back. Cryo is also offering 3 mo free storage if you order 2+ so I think 3 is a good number.
I'm maybe an outlier but we went through about 20 vials just to get our four frosties that we're hoping will finally get us pregnant. It sounds like you had a pretty easy time getting pregnant the fist time, that may not necessarily be the case this time around. Sorry to be a downer. I'd buy them all if you can afford it.

I would get several... We bought 5 from our first donor. Which we got pregnant with right away. Then we lost the baby at 5 months and tried 3 more times with the same donor with no success. We found out that the donor was retiring and the vials that were left are US siblings only. And since we didn't have a sibling, and from Canada we started looking for a new donor but left the one on ice. We tried two more IUI's with a new donor and nothing. So we used to last vial from the first donor for our IVF. Now we have no more vials for a full blood sibling, so we are a little screwed there... But yeah. I would expect the unexpected. We figured we would get pregnant super fast after the first baby and it didn't happen. And at least you can sell the vials back if you don't need them.. we couldn't as they were being stored at our RE.
I'll come in with a little dissension here. I think we spent close to $1000 per vial. I can't imagine spending $15,000 on sperm alone in order to use the same donor. I guess if you could sell it back it might be a different story. To me that's a whole lot of money.
I will say we started out at one sperm bank and after using 6 vials changed to NW Cryobank bc they're pricing is more like $400ish per vial. They had a donor we liked and their customer service was awesome.

How many children do you ideally want? After a certain number of IUI tries, would you switch to IVF? Or are IUI or bust? If you'd switch after say 3 IUI's, I would get 4 vials or if your only going to do IUI's then 6-9 vials.
Tough decision for sure. I'm not sure what we would do. We were notified our donor was low while I was pregnant so we bought one more vial since we have 8 embryos in the freezer with my eggs so if we use it, it would be for reciprocal IVF with CET's eggs.

We bought 10 to start because we want the same donor for 2-3 kids and figured that should be a good place to start. Our donor is still active too so if it takes a while we should be all set. We can also sell vials back (granted not for full price). We probably aired way more on the side of caution then was needed but it was hard to find a donor we both liked. cetcar is right though about knowing whether you'll switch to IVF quickly or stick to the process with IUI because that definitely makes a difference.

I would buy as many as I could afford. Because it may take more than one or two tries this time. 😔 and if you got lucky and it took right away again, you'd have enough for a third child if you wanted.
They are just super costly, and there's never a guarantee. It sucks, but I would buy at least 5 or 6 if I could swing it.
We initially bought 10. My wife got pregnant on her first iui. Then I blew through 7-8 iuis really fast and started freaking out cuz there weren't many left. Switched to IVF which usually gets you further with a vial.
So yea. If doing IVF it's very different than iui. It was extremely important to us to have the same donor.
