Anyone have a brick wall I can bang my head against?
DR. BOB'S DAILY:
MY ANSWER TO THE DISNEYLAND ADHD EPIDEMIC
I think the government should make ADHD meds mandatory for all kids with ADHD. This shouldn't be up to the doctor and patient. It definitely shouldn't be up to the parent. And there should be no discussion of side effects. If YOUR child was the only one affected by his ADHD, I could understand making the meds optional. But he's not. He affects everyone around him. Here are my nine reasons why the government should force ADHD meds:
1. Your child's untreated ADHD affects my child's schoolwork. My child is sitting in school trying to concentrate, and your child is sitting next to him fidgeting, tapping his pencil, talking to himself, and talking to MY child. My child can't concentrate. If you'd just medicate your child, he wouldn't disrupt my child so much. AND he wouldn't disrupt the rest of the class.
2. Your child's untreated ADHD takes up too much of the teacher's time. My kid can't ask the teacher a question because she's alway busy trying to help YOUR child. That's not fair. If you'd just medicate, then the teacher would have more time for the rest of the kids in the class.
3. I know what's best for your child - you don't. As a parent of a child in your class, I would say that I'm in a better position to make this decision than you are. You are not thinking clearly about this. You aren't objective. You're probably getting your information off the internet. I will continue to act with prejudice against you until you come around to my side of this issue, the ONLY side that responsible, educated people take.
4. Plus, we all know that untreated ADHD is contagious. If you don't medicate your child, he might transmit ADHD to my child. And that's just not fair. But what's even worse is what if MY child then brings home ADHD to my baby - a baby who is too young to even have ADHD meds yet. I don't want my baby to catch ADHD. So, please, for the love of God, medicate your child. Not to mention immunocompromised kids - ADHD affects them much worse than regular kids. How many millions of immunocompromised kids catch ADHD every year? They can't get meds themselves because of their compromised immune systems.
5. But the biggest reason of all is that ADHD could kill thousands of American children every year, especially with the recent outbreak that started at Disneyland. How did Disneyland even let an unmedicated child into the park in the first place? It's beyond me. And now look how far and wide it's spread. Ya, no one's died yet, but thousands are likely to die in the next few weeks.
We need our Legislators to get involved.
6. But they better act quickly. The Disneyland ADHD outbreak is coming to an end. I think there are a few more sporadic cases in a few states, so I am glad to see that the medical establishments in many states are "Bracing for ADHD to hit soon," a headline I just saw yesterday. I hope we are spending enough millions of dollars to prepare for this, otherwise I fear we won't be ready. I am also afraid that the public will find out that the outbreak is pretty much over, for now. That would lead to everyone calming down and forgetting about ADHD. Then there'd be no way for this legislation to pass. So, the media shift from "ADHD epidemic" to "BRACE for the ADHD epidemic" is sure brilliance at it's best.
7. Thankfully our Legislators are getting involved. They know that making sure every child with ADHD gets medicated is in everyone's best interest. It's for the Greater Good. Looks like we'll soon have a law that mandates ADHD meds for everyone with ADHD. Why leave this decision between just the doctor and the parent? That makes no sense.
8. Thankfully, there are no side effects. I know what you're gonna say. Some research shows a very small percentage of kids on ADHD meds will suffer sudden cardiac death. But a more scientifically accurate way to look at this issue is that MORE research studies have failed to prove a causal relationship between the meds and severe cardiac reactions. But just in case these side effects are real, we'd better be prepared to pay a good chunk of money in damages. And we can't hold the ADHD medication makers responsible, because . . . well . . . that just wouldn't make sense either. The government should control payment of the damages, which makes sense because the government is making the meds mandatory.
9. Plus, if the makers of the meds were held responsible for the side effects, that would require them to do some better safety research and make a safer product. Where's the sense in that? I know that pharmaceutical companies are held responsible for ALL OTHER medication dangers and mishaps, but there's just something special about ADHD meds which should (and does) give them a free pass.
I am happy to say the a growing number of legislators are on board with this plan, and we should see it go into effect in the years to come.
To recap: The government and other parents are far better equipped to make medical decisions regarding each child's ADHD than each involved parent is. There's no way we can leave this decision up to the parents and their doctors. Clearly, it is in everyone's best interest to medicate every child for ADHD. Parents who have a child with ADHD shouldn't oppose this plan because it's based 100% on science. Pure science. Every decision we make on this entire planet should be made based solely on science. Because science is never wrong. Especially science that is funded by the very objects which are the focus of that science. And even more especially because the professional boards who oversee and approve that science and the use of ADHD meds receive money from the makers of the meds.
But don't worry. I am completely confident that ADHD is the ONLY medical condition which the government is going to step in on and gain control of. In fact, that will probably be part of the legislation - ADHD meds, and only ADHD meds. Nothing else. For all other medical decisions, parents ARE equipped and educated enough to make an informed decision with their doctor. Whew.
So, whether you are for ADHD meds or against them, or just don't care, you gotta at least admit that this choice should rest in the capable hands of your government.
