Ray, my OB gave me an rx for the mini pill but I breakthrough bleed on it so I decided to wait until 6 mo PP because then she said I can take the dual hormonal pill without much risk to my milk supply. I also decided against the MP because of the failure rate if you don't take it consistently at the same time every day. With an inconsistent newborn, I can't guarantee that, so we'll just use condoms for now. Not like we are getting freaky frequently anyway. I also wouldn't not use anything though. Too many 2u1s in my friend circles due to thinking BF provided protection!
Ray going on BC shouldn't affect when your period returns. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the only hormonal BC you can take while BFing is the progesterone only pill aka mini pill. Most BC pills are estrogen + progesterone which can affect milk supply.
Last time I was EBF and My OB told me I didn't need to take BC for the first 3 months PP as long as my period didn't start, which she said wouldn't happen. And then my baby started to sleep 8 hours a night at 8 weeks PP and bam, there was my period.
I also got my cycle back as soon as baby slept about 6 hours. My first pp period last time was 10 weeks. ebf definitely is not guaranteed bc.

Do you wake up your babies during the day? I generally try not to let E sleep more than 2 hours so he will sleep at night - I'll wake him so he can eat and we can interact a bit. However, he's been giving me 1.5 hour stretches at night and likes to be wide awake at 3am. So maybe I'm doing things wrong. What says you? He's almost 4 weeks. Apparently despite all of my efforts, he still has his days and nights confused :-( And I have a toddler so I can assure you the house is loud and bright during the day.
rungirlrun With W it doesn't matter how much he sleeps or doesn't. Just when he feeds makes the difference. If he eats at 10pmish he will sleep until 2:30ish. Unless I have something planned the next day then he sucks at sleeping. Lol

Our nurse told us (since he had no weight issues) to sleep and eat on his schedule. We just made sure to really interact with him and kind of prolong sleep once he was up (no swaddling or rocking, lots of talking singing etc) at night I don't speak to him at all and I turn off the lamp once he's latched.

rungirlrun I think these babies do whatever they want no matter what. With DD I followed all the sleep stuff and she sucked at sleeping at night. With DS I am just winging it. He sleeps in our room during the day with lights off and swaddled becAuse if not DD will mess with him and he will never sleep or she will climb on him. Even with all that he sleeps pretty well at night.

I subscribe to the "the more they sleep, the better they sleep" and I've never woken Mal. But he's a good sleeper. With DD I did the same and she was a less good sleeper, so I don't think you can change them all that much.
One benefit of DD waking so frequently is that I didn't get my period until she was 15 months. Girlfriend never let me sleep through the night.

rungirlrun with L I don't wake him during the day, but I find he usually has a couple of awake stretches during the day (today was in the morning and around dinnertime: 2-3 hours each time). He tends to cluster feed during his awake times. Our house is loud and bright too.
One thing I do is only swaddle him at night, hopefully it's a cue that nighttime is different. For the past week he has fallen into a routine of late evening feed (11pm ish), MOTN feed, and early morning (5-6am) feed.
All babies are different and things can and will change at any time. Hang in there!

The only time I wake the girls is if one wakes up to eat during the day we wake the other so they are on the same schedule, although they don't usually sleep more than 3 hours during the day.
