In consideration of the dock-a-tot..... It seems like a very expensive SIDs hazard. They advertise for supervised sleeping only I think to get around this. Every Ped I have talked to consider it a safe sleeping hazard. And it is expensive for what you get. Going to step down from my safe sleep soapbox now. Personally they make me cringe.
You bring up a good point about SIDS and safe sleep...so I looked up what they post on their website about it. Definitely something to think about.
Overall it definitely depends on what people feel about safe sleep. Some parents let their kids sleep in the car seat all night or swing all night. Many co-sleep in environments that are not safe, yet parents resort to it in desperation. I feel that there are definitely ways to make co-sleeping as safe as possible, and I don't frown upon it at all.
Bottom line- the only safe sleep is in a crib, with a fitted sheet, no toys, no bumpers (not even mesh ones), no lose blankets and the baby on their back. Once they roll- no swaddle. Very few people follow this exactly 100% of the time. We are only human. But like I said, each parent will make decisions for them their baby/babies that they feel is best, and hopefully safest.
I am definitely not looking forward to the stress of figuring out how to keep sane, safe and happy (for all 4 of us).

I think we need to include bassinets and pack n plays in your description. They're essentially mini versions of the crib.

- A self-rocking rock n' play thing. I didn't have one with DD but I really want one this time around.
- Some clothes if this baby is a boy (we have a lot of neutral ones, but might need some stuff)
- New changing pad for on top of the dresser
- Bottles and pacis if needed
- I'm waffling on a new pump. I had one that was just OK with DD and I'm thinking about getting a good one this time around. I'm not in the US so no insurance pump for me.

shellbell yes you're totally right. They are safe if you follow the same guidelines as a crib. Idk why my kid would never sleep in that damn pack n play....i think the mattress was too thin.
billybumbler can you wait and see if you think you'll need a new pump? Make sure BF is working out and that your old pump isn't cutting it? I'm not sure I'd be willing to shell out for a new pump if insurance didn't pay, though I also had a "just okay" pump, and I definitely want a new one.

We only use it for travel. But I wanted to clarify for any FTMs who might already be questioning what they need/want.
I legit cringe when I see babies in beds with blankets and toys and crap. No. Just no.

That's probably what I will do in reality. But damn if I don't want a shiny new pump!

Is there any reason for me to buy new bottle nipples? Or can I just sterilize what I have? DS only took a bottle once a day and twice a day two days a week at DC, so our bottle were not heavily used.
I think it's recommended to replace nipples more due to age over usage.

Wait... Do you guys not get free pumps? Doesn't ACA offer you one free? Obviously outside the US is a different story. I'm pretty sure electric double Medelas are the free pumps...

Yes, I get one free. But it's not necessarily the Medela (which I'm fine with). I got a lansinoh last time and am hoping to get a spectra this time.

I haven't even thought about what I need to get for baby #2....... I figured that we would basically just reuse everything except for probably bottles? I do need to figure out a pump situation since I only rented one last time. Eventually we will need another crib, but this one will be in the pack n play near our bed for awhile while LO #1 is still in the crib.
Sorry for not thinking about the details, second child. :[

I'll get new pump supplies for my old one and also apply for a new one infer insurance. Keep 1 at home and 1 at work.

I would check your insurance guidelines, too. I found that my hand-me-down pump wasn't working well, so I looked into it when my baby was 9/10 months old, and it was too late. They only gave me 3/6 months (I can't remember) to get one after baby was born.

We need: - a new swing (getting one that plugs in and has more speeds)
- a crib and maybe 2 more crib sheets
- some cold weather clothes if it's a boy, all the clothes if it's a girl
- new bottle nipples
- a new sound machine (for either DS or the new baby)
- crib mattress
- new camera for the monitor system
- a towel or two and maybe some more washcloths
- some sort of double stroller - still deciding on this one.
- a few little baby toys that I wished I had with DS (not needs, obviously...)
- maybe some swaddles or swaddle blankets - if girl
- water proof pad for the mattress
- some decorations for either DS's room or the nursery (depending on whose theme we decide to change)
- i need a newborn wrap. I'm thinking a ring sling? But I'm clueless as to which kind to get. I have a k'tan, but it is a little too big on me, so I wasn't comfortable putting my floppy newborn in it last time. I'm planning on looking at the baby wearing thread, or asking one of my friends who is a master wrapper. I'm hoping to ask for this for Christmas.
As far as registries, I have one because my family likes to shop off lists like this, and I know they'll want to get things for the baby. Plus, the completion discount!
And I have been putting most of DS's baby-ish toys away as he outgrows them. In fact it's on my to/do list today to go through them again. He might want to play with them briefly when he sees the new baby playing with them, but I doubt he'll be interested for long. He'll be 19 months when baby 2 is born.
ETA: clothes hamper since DS will be in a new room! Will have to see if it will be baby 2 or DS who gets a new one

I was really interested in one until somebody commented that theirs had ended up flipped over the baby during a nap in their crib. I mean not that I really expect a one month old to be able to do that but for almost $200 I expect to be able to use it longer than like 3 months, and now I'm too nervous to buy one. Which is good cause I pry can't afford that haha.

+1 to this haha! My friend was convinced hers lost suction over the first year. Not sure if I believe that, but it's in the back of my mind. I'd hate to be wasting energy and not getting as much milk out as I could! Anybody experience a wearing down of the pump? I wonder if her supply dropping just mixed her up.

Did she try to change her other parts? Old membranes and such can really reduce suction. Also, I found that as I hit 6ish months and my boobs weren't out of control anymore, I had to drop down a flange size. If I wasn't really paying attention, I probably would have thought it was my pump. Or it just might have been her supply dropping.
I haven't taken out my PISA from DDs pregnancy, but it was working perfectly when I put it in storage. I'll get a new one this time probably for the sole purpose of having one at home and one at work.

I can't imagine how scared the mother was! Looking at their website I am very happy they took the picture of a newborn sleeping on its tummy off(used to be up a few months ago). I just wouldn't personally recommend them to anyone and this makes me like them even less. Thanks for the story.
-rumble seat for our UB vista to make it a double -second monitor camera -second crib (DD1 will only be 16mo when DD2 is born) -nursery decor -fleecey halo swaddles (last baby was born in warmer weather) -nursery decor -new nipples for bottles
I am sure I will buy some other things and some new newborn clothes, but since they are both the same sex I don't need a ton of clothes.

Rock-n-play... We didn't get one with DS because we were in a one bedroom apartment, but this time we are going to get one so the new baby can sleep in our room.

Good call, musicallyinclined. We're buying a deep freezer, too. Probably a chest freezer actually. FX my ILs are still willing to give us theirs - they're moving and don't want to take it with them.

oldbaylover1024 DH is adamant about not putting breast milk in the freezer part of our fridge. I pumped for my sister's baby too, she's a surgeon and her schedule isn't conducive to pumping, anyway it was a lot of milk. So, I'm happy to put it somewhere else.

I never mentioned Sophie the giraffe! I think we lost dd's but we will have one Day 1 with baby 2 because it was such a hit at our house. It's nice when baby gets attached to something that is great for playing and teething.
Also a question for STMs, do you expect to receive gifts from folks that will cover some of your needs listed above? I'm not saying another baby shower (that's a discussion for a WHOLE other thread), but for example, will your parents offer to buy you another crib?
I'm expecting clothes and toys from my in-laws... they also bought us our glider last time, but I'm doubting a big gift again.
I thinking I'll be thrown a shower... there's another gal at church expecting her first a week after me. We are two out of four of the entire childbearing population at church. I know she will be thrown a shower and I don't see them not including me. We weren't at this church (or in this state) while I was pg with DS, so there isn't a "but we just threw you a shower!" issue. I would expect lots of blankets and clothes, some of which won't be useful.
