I love the tone on tone raised pattern rugs, but I wouldn't do it for a heavy traffic area.
I don't like geometric pattern for that room, but I like geometric patterns in general. I think you need an abstract or vaguely floral pattern to hide pet hair, crumbs, whatever.
Have you looked at FLOR system? They have a showroom in town and I was really really impressed with the style and color options. You can take sample squares home. And then you buy tiles to make the rug pretty much whatever size you want. You can swap out tiles to wash them or replace if needed. I was amazed.
The feel of the carpet is certainly more industrial, but not like office carpet at all.

Yes! That is high on my list. I stalk their website and I need to just pull the trigger.
Go there! I have no clue how far the CA showroom is from you, but I went and walked barefoot on all the things there and picked out rugs that felt the best. Then I brought 6-9 samples home. H ended up vetoing it for our formal living room, wanting something more traditional, but if I ever need to replace basement carpet, Flor it is.

I am close to a couple. This is a trap.
lol. I meant that I went to the MN showroom. I'm not #flyacrossthecountrytobuyarugrich
I like the top one the best @juliagulia. Really, take a weekend and go in store. Seeing everything in person is super fun. and you can lay out your rug or plan cut pieces too.

I know you just said no shag... But this is not that high of a pile, it's so soft, and we really love it. I've got three kids, and it's made its way through 5 months with no stains, which is miraculous. www.overstock.com/7521496/product.html

Now, I want all the rugs. Overstock 'bohemian'search = my faves. I'm a fan of some pattern in the event of accidental popsicle drip or coffee spill and I'm a fan of texture, too.
