After hearing from maternal fetal medicine three times since last Friday that my amniotic fluid was low and I should pay close attention to baby's movements, I was a basket case. The plan was, if fluid was still low this past Thursday, we would induce at 37 weeks (Friday). It was still low, but MFM hesitated a little bit because babies who's Moms have GD can sometimes have respiratory issues at 37 weeks. Still, together with MFM, we decided the risk to the placenta and my mental state warranted induction.
We were told to head straight to the hospital after our MFM appointment to check in.
Thursday night they started misoprostol (a pill) to soften the cervix, every 3 hours. That wasn't so bad aside from being woken up every hour to track baby movements/get hooked up to the monitor, or take another pill.
Friday, we started Pitocin to get contractions going. Though they got me all the way up to 20 units? on the Pitocin, my body was only responding slightly. I went to sleep with pain meds and later on Friday, my OB checked again and I was only fingertip dilated . She decided to stop the Pitocin and insert a cok balloon. Holy shit did that hurt! My OB said because of the placement of my cervix and prior surgeries on my cervix, it would hurt more. She was right. They gave me laughing gas and I sucked on it so much I thought I was going to pass out. Note to others: if you are told they are inserting a cok balloon, ask for laughing gas and/or pain meds.
On Friday evening and Saturday, the balloon did its work and I got to 4cm! I was told this was the hardest to get to, so I was super excited. The balloon came out and Pitocin was started again. I again got to the max dose, but my cervix was not gonna play. I did not dialate at all.
Sunday, my OB was back and broke my water. They gave me a brief brake, then restarted the Pitocin again, this time going to 30 which made them nervous, but I apparently needed a high dose. I was having painful contractions, but cervix was NOT playing.
So Monday at around 5 pm, when my cervix was STILL at 4cm, they said I could try for a "little" while longer but not too long since my water was broken 24 hours before, or it was c-section time. Rather than continue with the definition of insanity, we went for the c-section.
It made me angry that they told me to eat lunch even though they knew I may be headed for a c-section. The anesthesiologist was not amused. Also, my body was not amused when laying down after the spinal, I puked. It's not easy to puke while laying flat on your back. Then they opened me up, and as they pulled her out, I puked more.
I heard her crying so loud and it was the BEST sound, especially after worrying about her lungs. DH went to be with her in another corner of the room and all I could hear from people were comments on how beautiful she is and how long her eyelashes are and how she's so feisty. It felt like forever before they brought her to me. As soon as they did, she stopped crying and I stopped shaking (which is a thing after a c-section...who knew?). She's scored 9/10 on her APGAR and, her blood sugars have been great. She doesn't need to get tested anymore for them.
We had an hour with her while they assessed her and she breastfed like a champ! She then proceeded to scare the crap out of me by turning blue for a few seconds before spitting it all up.
Our parents and SIL met her around 1am and are all in awe too. She is AMAZING. DH is ridiculously smitten, and I can't blame him.
Other than the fact that these crazy nurses think I can get up and walk to the bathroom and back right now (nope. not happening. Are they crazy?!), things are fine with me too.
And now, to introduce her to her TCF family:
Me.ghan Kathr.yn was born on October 3, weighs 6lbs 2oz, and is 20.25 inches long.
Sorry if the photo is huge...I'm on tapatalk and don't know what I'm doing.
