How old is your big kid? Boy or girl? DS1 is 6. He turns 7 in January.
What grade is your big kid in? 1st
How does your big kid like school? Favorite subjects? Challenging subjects? DS1 likes school but he struggles in spelling, writing, and reading. He loves books and loves being read to but doesn't like when he has to read. He is better at math and science.
1st grade has been somewhat of a struggle due to the weekly spelling tests and hour of homework each night.
How does your big kid relate to his sibling/s, if applicable? He does really well with S and will "play" with him on the floor. He is also able to reach over and out the pacifier back in S's mouth while we are in the car.
What is your favorite thing to do with your big kid? I love cuddling him and also going for hikes.
In what ways do you see yourself in your big kid? He is really stubborn and that comes from in me. His love of science comes from me and my side of the family as well.
What does your big kid want to be "when they grow up"? Well, for the longest time he wanted to be an angry bird... now I believe he wants to be an engineer or architect.
QOTW: When you were this age, what did YOU want to be "when you grew up"? A veterinarian. I started out college as pre-vet but working at a Vets office cured me of my desire. They were so jaded and were not personable at all and after looking into several other vet offices where things were similar I decided not to pursue that degree.
@boxerific did they expect your oldest to be able to write full sentances with correct punctuation at the beginning of 1st grade?
If I remember correctly, no. It all blurs together for me now, but I think that learning sentence structure was part of 1st grade.
Also, lol at him wanting to be an Angry Bird. Mine definitely wanted to be a Ninja Turtle for a long time.
We are having a problem with DS1's teacher expecting him to know how to do things that we think he shouldn't know just going in to 1st grade. The sentence structure is one of the major ones. She wants us to work on this stuff but she also sends the kids home with an hour of homework a day, which IMO is ridiculous for a 6 year old.
It's reassuring to know that other boys struggle with spelling and the like just like DS. Maybe it's a boy thing?
