We always went ToTing as kids. The only costume I really remember was one my mom made for me. She made me this princess dress out of teal blue satin-like material and i LURVED it. I wore it around all the time. I dont have any other particularly memorable costumes.
My favorite candy was probably Skittles. I am pretty meh on them now. It might have something to do with the change from lime to apple. FUCK THAT NOISE. Now I am all about Butterfingers.

I never went ToTing as a kid. We lived in a rural area and there wasn't any chance to. My mom would buy us candy and we would sit and watch scary movies.
My favorite candy is Kit Kats. This year I won't be eating the Halloween candy
Every year. I loved it. I used a pillow case from a body pillow so I could make fewer drop off trips at home lol
My favourite were the pop eye candy sticks that looked like chalk lol. Then chocolate bars. Then chips. I hated getting cans of pop because they were so heavy.
Things I remember dressing up as when I was a kid:
Simba Queen amadala (sp?) Darth Maul Punk cheer leader Nefertiti Hunter (the last year I went out - wasn't going to and decided at the last second so I just put on all my hunting stuff lol)
My go to every year as an adult has been mad scientist because I already have a lab coat and glasses.
This year DH and I will be wearing 3D glasses, F will be a bag of popcorn. The big kids are with the r mom - not sure what they're wearing.
We dressed up every Halloween as kids. The last year I went ToTing I was 12 and some old lady told my friend and I we were too old to do it. I handed out candy at our house after that.
I was a purple unicorn for like 3 years in a row as a kid. Pretty sure my mom still has that costume in their house somewhere.

acorn99, you can give me all your apple ones and cavewmn, can split her dark chocolate between me and powerofbacon.
Ray, I've never heard of chips or cans of pop for ToT. One time we drove way out in the country and surprised an older couple with their light on. They never got ToTers but were so excited that they wouldn't let us leave empty handed. So they made us bologna sandwiches and gave us random fruit from their fruit bowl.

When I was little, I was adamant that I was going to be a kangourou. My mom made me a costume with a baby that detached from my pouch! Over the years I've also been a cat, Dorothy, Harry Potter, Scarlett O'Hara, and Howie from the BSB (a group of friends and I dressed up like them in their "Everybody" video). I still dress up for the costume parade every year at school.
My favorite was Scarlett O'Hara, for a house party when I was 20. I bought an old green patio umbrella for material at Goodwill and sewed hula hoops into it for the skirt (for the record, I am not good at sewing, I only do Halloween costumes because only basic skills are required!)
Give me all the chocolate! Smarties, Reese cups, Oh Henry, Mars, Coffee Crisp!

This is awesome haha
You guys don't have mini bags of chips there? A ton of people hand them out here.
I ToT'ed every year until I could drive. For some reason that's when we deemed it "too old" lol. I was a huge Tom boy, always batman or some super hero. My most memorable costume was a spider witch. It was a fancy black dress with purple bell sleeves and my mom let me wear make up.
My favorite adult Halloween costume was from college.

Ray, my piano teacher gave out mini cans of pop to her students who ToTed at her house!
I loved ToTing, but MN falls can be hella cold-especially one year I think in '91, there was a blizzard on Halloween! So we always had to figure out how to incorporate thermal underwear and/or coats.
My mom made me an Ariel costume that was essentially a dress with a tail. It was lined with fleece and the tail and seashells were this awesome metallic fabric. I wore a big red wig and I remember posing for a pic sitting on a big rock just like in the Disney film. I hope my mom still has the pic.
I rarely dress up as an adult--no real opportunity. I think next year we will try to take DS ToTing so maybe we will do a group theme.
My favorite candy to get was Reese's (the minis!) and now my favorite now is anything dark chocolate + fruit, or Take 5 bars. Sweet and salty, yum'

My mom usually hands out mini bags of Doritos
We have the mini bags of chips here, they are just rarely handed out as treats.

So growing up my dad was big into Halloween. He is 50 and still dresses up every year. Here are a few pics, anyone without a mask or makeup has a sticker: Me and my dad. Notice how the zombie makeup has me smiling. I was 2.
This was my favorite toy growing up, during Halloween it was on our porch on the scarecrow my dad put up. The rest of the year it was mine. Apparently I even used it to scare an older kid who was picking on me at the doctor's office once.
This was me as Ariel, my mom as a 80's rock star I think, my sisters as a bunny and Mickey, but she wouldn't wear a mask. My dad is behind me and the other three are cousins. Flash is the same boy as the baby in the pic with me and the mask.

I grew up in a rural area we would hop in the car and drive to neighbors houses and our relatives. I never trick or treated in a town until i was 11. Stopped at about 13.
If there is a theme to much costumes it is being cheap. If i had it or could buy it from good will that is what i had. I probably put the most work into my luna lovegood costume several years ago.
I will take all the candy, but i liked the houses that handed out the full size candy bars that was awesome.
Did you dress up for Halloween as a kid? Omg yes!! Of course this was back in the day where our parents didn't even chaperone.
What was your favorite costume? So I had some good ones when I was a kid - dead simese twins (shared a huge shirt with a friend complete with makeup), a Republican (DH still lol - we are in Texas people - mainly an all denim cowgirl outfit with a cowboy hat blinged out with glitter and Republican propaganda). College and adult have mainly been slutty or random. Last year I was a skeleton
What was your favorite candy? What is your favorite now?

See Ray, even you agree that chips instead of chocolate is weird!
We always knew the houses growing up that went all out and has full sized chocolate bars. One house even said eff it and handed out dollar bills. Def a small town.

Ray I'm more interested in your grade of four minus. That's weirder than chips at Halloween.
Fwiw, one neighbor keeps and hands out mini goldfish packets to toddlers. That was awesome our first year with DD when she was old enough to want a treat but too little for real candy.

It's an A-
Here we do level 1,2,3,4 instead.
Until report cards - then we switch to letters. It's messed lol

We do this! For when DS1's little friends come to the door.
Ray your journal entry has convinced me to never hand out chips! Ha ha. Usually we hand out Koolaid jammers because I can get them for $1.49/box on sale, but they haven't been on sale lately and time is ticking... might have to go the chocolate route! I should hit up Costco. We usually get about 100 kids.

Last year we got two
So this year we're going to my moms to hand out candy - she gets close to 200 each year.
