britterrss you are a GREAT mama! A lot of BF babies are anemic when solids aren't a regular thing. DS was also not a fan. As soon as he started eating more, he was fine. And our pedi wasn't concerned. This time L hasn't been checked yet? And we are also up many times a night. Her reaction to that was "you're the mama! It will get better." Truth.

britterrss, nope nope nope. Is this the same pedi you saw before and didn't like or have you already switched?
You can't force W to eat. It's not like you're depriving him of nutrients he's begging you for and forcing yourself on him instead. You're following his lead. Just keep offering and hopefully he'll take to it eventually (we are in the same boat). I know LOTS of babies that didn't STTN until 12+. Is he developing and hitting milestones? Is he happy and secure and loved? Yes? Okay then.
We get the anemia test next month and I'm sure it will come back positive.

Yeah and it was even the PA this time, not the doc. Guess I need to find someone new.
Yes. It was 9.something, so not super low but still.
Why are they doing that already? They don't check it here until their 1 year appt. With DS I was very much a rule follower when it came to which foods to introduce during what months, so he didn't even eat meat until somewhere around 9 months. So this seems strange to me. I would just keep doing what you are doing and not get hung up on the number until he is at least a few months or so older and eating solid meals is more of what his diet is made up of. And I think it's annoying that breastfed babies supposedly need all these supplements because it's not formula with all the added stuff. It's breastmilk, it's enough.

How did babies even survive all these thousands of years amirite?

Flu booster. And fluoride treatment. She said we would do the fluoride there every 6 months and there's no need for toothpaste for quite a while, just use the banana brush after breakfast and before bed. She said he's developing well but his communication is "borderline/normal" and she gave me an activity sheet. Seeing as his gross motor skills are ahead, she said he will probably just be an early walker, late talker, which is "totally fine." (britterrss I thought you'd like this..) she said 9 months is when they really start nitpicking, looking for issues, and they will always find something for you to work on, no matter how great they're doing. So, not to worry when things come up.
tkford216, your pedi seems chill. I like her response to the things they look for!
She's great. I think she added that disclaimer because after she said he needs to work on communication skills, I did the ftm "but he can do this, and this, and this too, so he's totally fine right? Right?!" Lol.

What kinds of activities did she recommend?
She gave me this sheet. Standardized thing (I would guess some of you got this as well?)
And (for communication stuff) she said to do a lot of word association, reading, make sure we are talking through activities we do, use names and labels whenever possible, wave hi and bye even if he can't do it, encourage him to keep talking by copying his babbles.

Weight:15 lbs 14 oz with cloth diaper on (which i think their scale is super wrong because i weighed at our mommy group and she was 17lbs naked.) so i just eye rolled. Length:28 inches Head circumference: she didn't tell me
How did the visit go? ok. a lot of eye rolling. Like the wean bottle (of breast milk) before a year. also she said we should already be replacing breast milk with Homo milk at some meal. umm no thanks, not yet.
G got her flu shot; I asked if it was 2 doses because of every one on here (including Canadians) getting 2. and she said "nope only one now, they change it so often" so i am not sure if she just gave her a larger dose bc she doesn't want to have to make another appt. i dunno.
Any concerns you brought up? no concerns. we ended up waiting for over an hour after checking in and then another hour sitting in the little office waiting for the doctor. G was having none of it by the time the doctor came. so we just wanted to get out of there.
*snip* she said 9 months is when they really start nitpicking, looking for issues, and they will always find something for you to work on, no matter how great they're doing. So, not to worry when things come up.
We had the opposite experience. Our doctor seemed very unconcerned about milestones. I asked what she thought about DD not crawling yet and she basically shrugged and said she was confident that she would be walking at her 12 month appointment.
Oh, I forgot. That weird rash thing he's had on his belly.. she thinks it's eczema. So I need to get some eczema cream for him. Poor kid has my overly sensitive skin.

Mine too. I slather her with the Aveeno baby eczema lotion every night and it seems to work pretty well.
How did the visit go? Pretty standard. Talked about transitioning to a sippy cup, got fluoride and shots. Otherwise the doctor seemed surprised by her motor skills and said she seems to be developing perfectly.
Any concerns you brought up? L has a bit of eczema, too. Doctor said she could give us a prescription cream, but didn't think it was necessary unless it gets worse.

Mustella lotions work pretty well. The Stelatopia kind worked very well on DS when his skin got sensitive. However now I use Vanicream on him (you can find at Walmart near the Cetaphil and alike products) and it works great. 👌🏻

Fluoride? At your dr appt? Huh?
Yep. We had it too. It's like a paste they paint on the teeth and gums every six months.

Yeah my dentist does it when I'm in there. I've never heard of the doctor doing it, and not on their gums. DS had his first this summer when he had his first trip to the dentist.

We use these at my job I also have access to more specific ones we use if a child is low or borderline low in any of the categories. So I can share those, if anyone's interested.

They only put it on L's teeth. Said they wouldn't do it after she starts going to the dentist.

Yea, I think this is the "until you start going to the dentist" thing, which around here they don't expect you to do for quite a while.

Julian:
Wt: 18lb 11oz Ht: 28" Head: 45.5cm
I didnt go. My husband took Julian and the 2.5yo for their combined appt all by himself. No shots so it was easy for him.
I was concerned about communication for jules but he has since started signing milk, all done, and bye (similar signs) and shaking his head no so I am no longer concerned.
My husband did think that the NP pulled back on the foreskin a little much, but he also said Julian didnt react so I think maybe it only looked worse than it was. Last time I saw her she said I was good for speaking up to tell her not to retract it, so it was surprising she did anything at all. I think it is just one of those things I have to remind them not to touch for years.
As for others, fluoride treatment?? Never had that done for either kid but it sounds like something I would opt out of. I dont even use fluoride toothpaste for DD.

Weight: 25.12 lb Length: 31 inches Head circumference: don't remember but on par with weight and height as far as percentiles go. Basically he follows his own growth chart like his sister did.
How did the visit go? Well, a quick cry for the flu shot but that was it.
No 9 month appt for us. We went at 8 months and again next month.
I'm curious about these communication skills. What's expected? I thought it was pretty much just babbling at this point.
The assessment that they gave me, if I remember right, had things like: saying three "words," understanding simple directions like "pick up the toy" without an accompanying gesture, being able to do a nursery game themselves like "so big" or "patty cake," and waving hi and bye. My pedi said it's not expected that they do all of it, but this is when that starts to become developmentally appropriate so they like to see some of it being done. But she also said babies tend to work on some skills a lot and get around to the others later, which is why a lot of kids fall into either "early walker, late talker" or "early talker, late walker" and both are fine.
