For those of us not announcing over the holidays...

How do you plan to explain away the lack of booze?  I get a healthy dose of side eye if I only drink water,  or if my wine glass never has more than 1 sip.  What is your plan to avoid discovery.

I hadn't announced yet for Thanksgiving/ my 30th bday, so I filled up my glass with sparkling cider. No one even noticed

I bought some sparkling cider for when we're drinking champagne. Then, when we switch to wine/beer, I'm going to make DH drink a bottle of beer, then I'll rinse it out and keep filling it with water. That way, I'll have something to actually drink and no one will be the wiser.

That's a good idea! Or drink "vodka sodas" all night and just forget to add the vodka

As an ongoing issue,  there may be some merit to over-consuming grape juice.  Off to see if I can find one without too much extra shit in it.

This is the worst part for me! I've already had 2 weekends that I've had to fake drink. So annoying.

I got some of the NA wine (tastes like shit but at least I have something in my glass). Also have put water in my can.

I have 2 Christmas's and my brother's wedding on NYE to get through!

Same here. Now we just tell the friends that we usually drink with right away. They'll know before our families. And they've been wonderful through good and bad news.

I was looking on Pinterest at these cute Valentine's Day pregnancy announcement cards. I think I will mail them to my family. No Facebook announcement. It will be personal and low key. My husband thinks that great but we need to do something special for his parents. I can't relive it. Our first announcement to them was perfect. You can't recreate it, it's done. I don't want to do in person announcements.

I like your idea of mailing out personal announcements to those people you feel comfortable announcing to. I wish I had any advice on how to tackle announcing to your in-laws.. I hope you and YH will be able to come up with an idea that works for both of you. I haven't even thought as far as announcing yet but doubt it will be one on social media.. I think we will too be mailing something to certain family and friends.

I know this is late for Xmas, but might help for New Year's. One of my normal drinks is a gin and tonic so I just drink tonic and lime and as long as no one asks to taste your drink it works. Otherwise I get a glass of wine and my husband drinks it when no one is watching.

A friend of mine would have her husband drink a beer really fast and then fill the bottle with water. I thought that was a bit much but if it works for you...
