We had our first ultrasound on Friday, I was tracking 8w2d based on when I ovulated. My OB started the ultrasound and my husband could see well, I could sort of peek a little.
OB: "Well, I definitely see a sac and baby!" She started squinting her eyes a bit, like she was focusing on something.
I peek at the screen.
Me: "Huh, what's that other spot?"
OB: "I think it's just the placenta? Hmmm...looking at it closer"
Husband and me: " sure looks like there are two things in there. Please don't tell us it's twins" (we're strongly in the party of one camp)
OB: "well, that's what I'm trying to figure out"
Long story short, we all see two things in the sac. She measures there and they're measuring almost identical. The blood drains from my husbands face. I started panicking.
She got a heartbeat on one, not the other. She said she was going to need us to get another ultrasound from a perinatologist (she doesn't have one at her practice as she has a private practice), though she was pretty certain she saw twins.
The local hospital squeezes us in, we rush over there, and my normally cool as a cucumber H is freaking out, I'm crying. it's just crazy.
We get into the Perinatologist and we did both a external and internal ultrasound. She confirms there is...ONE baby!! She was positive. OMG. We've never been so happy to see that one baby!!
BUT with that...both the OB and perinatologist measured little green ball at 7w1d, but it had a strong heartbeat of 150! Still have a while to go (we're doing genetic testing as I'm over 35, etc.) but man, what an emotional day it was!
With THAT, it puts my due date in September, so I'm going to head over there!
Question: Does anyone go see a perinatologist on top of their OB? The perinatologist recommended it (of course) since technically I'm higher risk as I'm over 35...
