Does anyone here have experience with bone marrow donation? Mh got a call that he matches with a very sick girl. He is getting his labs drawn today to confirm that he is a match and healthy enough to donate.
I'm so proud of him. This is such a great thing to do and he's such a giver. But... I'm also a little nervous. I've been doing research online, but would love to hear any first hand experience if anyone has any.
I have no experience, but I'm so glad that he's doing this! I am on a donor registry, so I'll be following this thread just in case I ever find myself in that position!

Our good family friend gave bone marrow to his father. It's a relatively easy procedure these days. I think recoup time for him was about a week total. H got called about being a match for someone, but his labs weren't as compatible as they wanted it.
This is a great thing. Superman's god grandad died from graft vs host disease. He had leukemia. My H and I are both signed up with Be the Match and when Superman gets old enough, we will talk to him about doing it as well.
I think it is awesome that your DH is doing this. The husband of one of my best friends is a leukemia survivor, thanks to a bone marrow donation from his brother over 20 years ago, when they were teenagers. Such an amazing gift of life!
DH and I are both 38 TTC since Feb 2013 Diagnoses: PCOS ("lean"/non-IR), borderline hypothyroid, hyperprolactinoma 6 TI/IUI cycles in 2014 (2 Clomid, 4 Femara) - 1 cancelled, 5 BFN IVF #1: March 2015 - 22R/12F. 7 frosties FET #1: May 2015
There was a woman on the old board whose two children were both born with a rare platelet disorder and are now alive and healthy thanks to a bone marrow transplant.

My MIL is alive due to a transplant. I'm also on the registry. I'm not add certain about the other side of the process. I hope things go smoothly for your H.
I am on the gift of life registry and got the call in 2012. They wouldn't let me donate at that time due to so many mc but did say I would be put on a drug such as Neupogen to grow more cells in order for a transfer to occur. One thing that is very important is to check with your own doctor and a hematologist before starting and medication for the transfer as sometimes the doctors are very focused on their patient and not the donor according to my hematologist.

No advice or experience, but I did want to say that your husband is awesome for being on the list and going through with the labs! I hope everything goes smoothly for him!

This is something that I really want to do. There is a lot of info and videos on bethematch (forget if it's .com or .org). Sometimes they are able to get cells thru a less invasive method (depending on what the recipient needs). Either way, it's an amazing thing he'd be doing for someone.
My niece has primordial dwarfism and as part of her condition she needed a bone marrow transplant 2.5 years ago. Luckily both of her younger siblings were matches for her. She was 10 at the time and her siblings were 9 and 6. They chose her 9 year old brother since he was older and her 6 year old sister was afraid of needles.
My nephew was a champ with the procedure. He was under anesthesia for the spinal tap and when he woke up he just really wanted food. So overall the procedure didn't seem to phase my nephew. If I remember correctly, he wasn't able to do contact sports that summer but was back to normal activities a few days later.

A guy I work with just did this a couple weeks ago. I was scared for him, but he described it all and it's MUCH different than it was years ago. He was only out of work a couple days, and he said the worst part was his lower back was very sore one day.
