Question for those that have sold a home--In your experience, how much work/money did you put into improvements just to sell it? Our carpet is pretty worn out (but clean) and our paint in the whole house is builder-grade, super matte and light cream in every room. We should have about $4000 of our tax return to use, but I'm worried that we won't get our money back and that sellers would rather pick things out themselves anyway. If we have to pick one, would you do the floors or the paint?
If you have the time, go and check out some open houses in your neighborhood. See what the sales prices are and the conditions of the houses. Also, your Realtor should be able to help answer these questions more specifically as I dont know your market that well. In the DC area, you could add a couple thousand (not too much, but it makes the house look nicer so you can "puff" up the price to reflect) to the sales price if you have hardwoods so that's what Im basing my knowledge off of
