I feel like I'm sliding in sideways on this. I didn't see the thread, but am taking the opportunity to debate, discuss or otherwise liven it up over here.
DW alerted me to the fact Chingy is considered old school in your world. I don't know your top five, frankly top five hip hop artists vs hip hop performers vs lyricists, etc are different for me. But if Chingy is a book end...have you explored pre-2003 hip hop/rap? Do you checkout any of the amazing underground artists out there.
I could talk/listen hip hop all day. I'm not a fan of a lot of the current stuff out although some tracks are catchy. eddiegotsole (Are You Still Down?) and I discussed a shared love for Real Hip Hop (See what I did there 😜) awhile back.
What are your favs, man?
Some of my favs that tend to be lesser known to the mainstream listener.
Brother Ali Atmosphere Felt (Slug from Atmosphere with Murs) Jean Grae (top ten Emcee) J.U.I.C.E. Little Brother
Some other stuff you may like Rakim EPMD Freeway A Tribe Called Quest Dru (thanks for tip Eddie)
And if you just like a good track with amazing strings...Mari Ben Ari (hip hop violinist) is just...wow!

There are a lot of the older stuff I am not a fan of. To me hiphip was good in the late 90s to the 2000s. I do like Freeway, Not a fan of EPMD or a Tribe Called Quest. You can call me a millennial all you want to but there is a certain style, rhythm, qualities, harmony I look for in a good song/album. Atmosphere is ok.
What I have currently running on my playlist: Jedi Mind Tricks Army of the Pharaohs Trick Trick T-Pain Transporta Akon Twista Nas Future Kevin Gates MC Chris Three 6 Mafia Pretty Ricky Wiz Khalifa
I am big into R&B too. that's for another story. Also I like a lot of underground over mainstream as well.
Suggestions from the underground Nice Krispy DZK Spoonfull M80 Catalyst Dumbfounded Black Prez John Connors
Na, not my intention to millennialize. it's really what you say...it's a rhythm and style that appeals. I'm down with most of your current play list. The others are just not my taste. I'll check out your suggestions. I'm a fan of DZK and M80 has some good stuff.
Pharoahe Monch, Cunnalynguist, TQ each have a unique quality compared to some others. Aceyalone has more of a quality similar to stuff on your list but is older. Okayplayer is one of my fav tracks. Although I wouldn't say they are a rap/hip hop master piece, I was a big Lox fan. I preferred Sheek to Jada when they went solo.
Master Ace and Blueprint (mostly the Weight Room LP) have more of that stripped down emcee and a simple beat feel.
I was never a big Ludacris fan, but dude puts on a great show. If you are into insane lyrics, Supernatural is crazy and freestyles like few others.
90's-00's is this period of a shift and IMO is often a different sub-genre from earlier stuff. Not better or worse just different. Even shifts from Biggie and TuPac to those shortly after. Even TuPac's posthumous releases have different beats that kept them current but ever relevant lyrics.
I have pretty eclectic tastes as well. I feel like Jazz is one of those "it all sounds the same" until it was explained to me. Now I can hear the variations. I'm pretty sure it's similar to when I left my Immortal Technique CD in my dad's truck back in high school. My "but it has a solid intelligent political message" argument didn't help with the "this rap shit is garbage" stare I got.
Out of the box? You like Outkast, Obie trice, Nappy Roots kinda out of the box? It's not "hard rap" not really like other hip hop, etc.
