scout251 you are north Jersey right? I grew up in Bergen County. Where either you have money or pretend to have money. It amazes me when I see the lifestyles some of my HS peers live. DH and I make good salaries and live in middle of nowhere CT and still can't afford half that stuff. But we are also money conscious and are big on saving so we have a nest egg.
Of people taking vacations. Getting new cars, new toys, doing fun things. We have like $0 for anything these days. Vacation is so far out of reach, it's laughable. I love my kids and I know material things aren't important but I can't shake the jealousy.
Honestly a lot of them could just flat out be living above their means too. Obviously using social media to portray what they want others to see if a big part of it as well. It's hard not to compare yourself to what you see and judge yourself in a way, I get it. Head up. 😊
Dh's friend is always taking lavish vacations. I'm not even kidding when I say she takes a week off every month to go to Iceland or Hawaii or London. I had mentioned how I wish I could do that and Dh informed me that she works 3 jobs and never has money for anything. In private she complains about having no money for food or clothes. She clearly doesn't have good spending habits, but you'd never know on FB.

Yes and it's so insanely expensive to live around here. I don't understand how some of my friends afford the things they do. DH and I switched to a 15 year mortgage and are trying to set ourselves up to retire a bit early and I can only assume that other people don't think about retirement and stuff...otherwise I don't know what we're doing wrong.

+1
I get jealous of people on FB too but I personally only post the cute pics of DS there and don't post when I'm having a bad day or week, when everyone was sick or when I'm depressed. So I imagine most people do the same except the AWs. One of my friends always posts pics of amazing events or trips she's going on and I get jealous. But she's also hiding the fact that she's lonely because she's single.

15 year mortgage is much shorter than the standard which is 25 years. I wouldn't say someone that takes a 25 or 30 year mortgage isn't thinking about retirement

That was just one example of a reason we don't have money to do other things. None of my friends have gotten a shorter mortgage and that's why I said "I assume or I must be doing something wrong."

Do you pay a lot more each month than a 30 year? In my mind, I assume you pay double, but I'm guessing I'm incorrect. We haven't looked into a 15 year mortgage but it sounds awesome to have that bill paid off so much sooner.

It's not nearly double. We were able to refinance with a lower interest rate so our payments are only about $450 more a month and over the life of the mortgage we'll pay around $200,000 less in interest. If you can get a better interest rate it could totally be worth it.
I'm late to respond, but I have the jealousy too! I give up FB every year for lent. I do it so I waste less time on it. But it's also a bit freeing. I know I'm lucky to have 2 well paid jobs in our household. I spend way way to much money on childcare, but when I'm gone for so long each day it helps me feel a little better. That being said, I have an old car and never buy new clothes. My neighbor pulled out of the driveway in a tesla. So yep - a little jealous. I want a highlander or pathfinder for the 3rd row seating!

Ok, I feel so much better. I thought I was going nuts, like really losing it, but I see here that I'm not the problem. Facebook is the problem! Maybe we need to do a board challenge to give up Facebook for a month and track how much better we feel, etc.

I basically never go on FB. There is no time and I found it was the same stuff being said or posted over and over.
Once in a while I message someone or put a new pic of Peyton and that's it.
It kinds of seems like such a waste of time. Do I really need to like 30 new pictures from people every day?

I agree with a lot of what you said. I have to use fb for work, so I can't quit it completely which is unfortunate. I think if it weren't for work, I'm actually to the point where I would delete my account. Family can see what Dh posts and what I post of IG.
