Hi BNB! Or do we say NTK now? I've had a crazy week with finding out my cervix disappeared and getting an emergency cerclage but we also found out its another boy. Given the scary situation I feel like I want to try to nail down his name soon...
We are between Miles and Julian with mn Edward. Big brother is Gavin.
My current question -- what would you use as a nn for Julian? I know I've seen people suggest Jude but I'm not sure if that is a legit nn for Julian or if it should be considered it's own name. I don't like the idea of using Jules as it sounds too feminine to me. I'm also aware of the Beatles Jude/Julian background but wanted your expert opinions
Why do you even need a NN? Julian is such a great name, it's not clunky, and well, the one NN that makes sense you think is feminine.
You don't have to have a NN derived directly from the kids name. Sometimes non-name based NN come to you, or are earned over time. I feel like people worry way to much about having a NN for a child who isn't even born yet.
Would you use a nn for Miles? I don't think Julian feels any longer or more cumbersome than Miles. I am def a nn person but I don't think a nn has to shorten a name or even be very similar if it's being used as a pet name. It's different if the nn is what you would want to call him primarily.

If we had a boy he would have been Julian. I know it's a stretch but I love the nick name Joel. It's not cutesy or girly sounding but it is also a name all its own so might not be a hit with most people.
I know this isn't helpful but I love Julian on its own. I don't understand the general propensity to find NN's in every scenario.
I may just be miffed as both sides of our family immediately found their own nicknames for our son - expected in just a few weeks. "Oh, you can call him ____ !" What's wrong with calling him by his given name?
I'm fine with it happening organically but to seek it out is odd to me and defeats the purpose and/or intimacy of a NN being coaxed out over time.
I love Julian and wouldn't use a nn. I don't think people would necessarily try to make a nn either.
I did know a guy in college that used the nn Ian like dreadpiratebuttercup, mentioned. I was surprised to learn it was only his nickname and full name of Julian though since it wasn't something I would automatically think of.

OMG-- scary, but glad everything's OK and yay for brothers.
My co-worker has a Julian, and she really only calls him by his full name. I could see defaulting to Jules -- like Jules Verne-- which is a cool NN. I like Jude, but to me it's a totally seperate and unrelated name (St. Jude).
Anyway-- after all of that I totally love Miles and Gavin as a sibset!

I agree with this. Miles isn't any more nicknameable than Julian. Either would probably lend itself to a pet name like PP mentioned Juju.

I guess in my mind the three syllables meant more of a need for a nn with Julian. With Gavin we don't use a nn except for pet names and I wouldn't look for a nn with Miles either.

We are considering the name Julian, too. I agree with PP, a nickname is not necessary. It stands up on its own. That said, I really like the nn Jack. I've known guys named John and James who use Jack, so it seems like a solid multi-purpose nn for J-names.
The name Julian is great, and I think it stands well on its own. If you're looking for nicknames, depending on his middle name, you could call him JJ or JC or something similar? J is a great initial for those kinds of nicknames
