Apparently I've never taken a picture of my dining room. I also have a doorway where the buffet goes making it off center from the light. Because the big opening was center with the room and the light we placed the table directly under it and the buffet it centered on its own wall. It bothered me for about a week, but now it makes so much more sense to me. Because the table is the biggest piece in the room it feels overall more balanced and grounded because it's with the light. KWIM?
tjanca22 I also think it would look nice to center the table in the room if you can. Then it would be centered with the arch and the light. Here's a few I found.
The second one is more my style and we need to go to Lowes tomorrow to pick up some materials for DS's bedroom that we're redoing. I think we will take a look if there's anything we like there!
I hid in my closet and pretended to not be there while he sheepishly put it in his truck. I felt like SUCH an asshole, but come on! Why did he have to choose that moment to show up?!
Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! I asked H if he'd help move the table tomorrow when he's home to see how it looks centered in the room. The damn thing weighs about 500lbs!
jubilantsquirrel H gave the one I like a thumbs up! If we don't find anything at Lowes tomorrow I think we're going to order that one!
And because you were all good sports, I'll treat you to one last picture of this room when we first bought the house - purple and metallic floral wallpaper! I sometimes wonder what made us even look at this house?
LOL sophiegrace . At least he got to take it with him? I mean, if he liked it that much he should've asked the realtor to exclude it in the contract when y'all bought the house! (I thought about doing that with our new light fixtures, except I have nowhere to put them. :sad trombone:)
Wow, what a makeover tjanca22 . When you get rid of the swans, it's going to be like a whole new room!
I also love Lamps Plus for lighting, and fun fact for anyone who's interested, they have a section in the upper right corner of the home page where you can access their "Open Box" site--basically you can buy customer-returns for a big discount. I was eyeing a $225 lamp for C's nursery and checked Open Box, and it was there for around $100. You just have to check often if there's something you have in mind. They don't sell damaged merchandise, just items that were returned if a customer changed their mind.

Well that's what he gets for coming by so much. That's just weird!
This is my kitchen (not my decor, it's from the sale listing). I feel like it's a tad dark and boring.
I'm thinking I want to paint the backsplash a pastel aqua like this:
And put in quartz countertops in a lighter color:
Will that sufficiently brighten up the space or should I also be thinking about painting the cabinets? Other thoughts? The floor is staying what it is because that tile is also in our breakfast area, halls, bathrooms, office nook, and laundry room.

Love the counter tops ClassyMrsA! This is my inspiration for my "maybe someday" kitchen remodel. I think the glass subway tile would look pretty in your kitchen with the white quartz counters.
ClassyMrsA beautiful kitchen! My first thought was to put in a backsplash. Is there one already? I can't tell. But that would really change the entire look of the kitchen I think! Are you interested in a pattern at all? I feel like (you know me and my fear of clashing) that because you have neutral countertops you can get away with anything!
I love the look of this one and the colors of the backsplash really brighten up the kitchen
ETA I love those quartz countertops!!
Yes, it has a backsplash. It's made from the same tile as the floor. I am thinking I'll paint it. 1) On a teacher budget, if I like how it looks I've saved some nearly $2000. 2) Removing those big tiles is going to be awful. It's a difficult type of grout to remove and the mess it'll make...don't want to deal with it.
I am considering taping it so that it isn't just a solid color. . I'm not sure how it would look up close, but it might add some interest.
jubilantsquirrel You don't think it would look weird with the current grout lines? I really like the two tone one you posted. I could do a cream and an aqua or a darker aqua and a light one. I thought about maybe breaking up the tiles into smaller shapes so the grout lines are incorporated more easily. Also, ftr, that light aqua beveled glass subway tile is my favorite and, if I had the money, I'd have it installed yesterday. This is a close up of my current backsplash.
goldenlove3 Nope. But I've done a lot of painting in houses in general and I feel pretty confident after reading about how to do it so it doesn't peel and can be cleaned.
waitwhat Well our house still isn't fully done (like backsplash isn't done and therefore the hood above the stove isn't in, one of the island pendant lights aren't installed) so it's not much fun to look at yet. I also have one baby sleeping on me and the other right here on the couch sleeping so it's difficult to take a good shot right now but I can use pics I have on my phone.
We have an open floor plan. Walk into a little foyer and to your right is stairs to 2nd floor, left is living room, directly in front is kitchen and island, and to the side of the kitchen is a dining space (visible from living room but not foyer because it's behind those stairs).
This is the rug and color of our floors
This is the kind of cabinet we have plus black hardware
ClassyMrsA We have friends who had luck with a peek and stick tile that was placed directly over existing tile backsplash. She couldn't stand the existing backsplash anymore but didn't want to put the money in bc they are selling their house. It looks pretty decent except for one time she messed up on - maybe look into that? Her tile shape was exactly like yours.

ClassyMrsA, I think you could make a two tone work, I'll look around some more to see if I can find examples similar to your tile pattern.
Omg kleigh, Edison lights are my absolute most favorite thing in the entire world right Now! H likes them too and I really want to put them in the entry/front room, over the dining table and also find a fan with Edison lights for the back room. It seems like they don't give off a ton of light though, do you find that to be true? And also I think the replacement bulbs are $$$?

I want something like this for the entry/front room and also for over the dining table, but maybe a little bigger? The ceiling in the front room and kitchen are vaulted.
And then a fan similar to this in the back room (open to kitchen/dining area.

I love that 2nd one jubilantsquirrel! So pretty! I'm really into those sphere shaped lights these days. We got lucky and have some nice fixtures here. It's a 1 story so no entry light. I do want to replace our front porch light and our patio light.
jubilantsquirrel They do not give off much light AT ALL. It works ok for us bc FIL installed 3,207 recessed lights in the kitchen and LR so light is not an issue. That said, We have the "vintage look" bulbs in right now and neither of us care for them bc they look dingy, esp against our ivory cabinets. I know they make the same style in a clear glass so we're looking for that. I LOVE the second light you posted, the round one. We are considering something like that for over the dining table

That's what I was afraid of. I wonder if the clear glass would give off better light? I should probably go visit a light store and see these things in person.

kleigh, I also love your table! Are you looking for chairs to go with it? I think a colored chair or a pretty pattern would look really nice with that table.

YES! That is another thing I'm looking for. I mean, we still need a ton of stuff.
- dining chairs - island chairs - backsplash - island and dining table decor - potentially a rug under dining table ? - potentially a wallpaper on the wall behind dining space. It's rather bare right now and our walls are a very light gray/beige all over the first floor. H wants to make the wall behind dining table pop either with paint or a fancy wallpaper

kleigh LOVE everything! That's the style that I want to go for when we build our new house. I was just telling H yesterday that our traditional everything is boring.
jubilantsquirrel +1 to loving those style bulbs! They do sell LED versions on Amazon (maybe other places too) so maybe those will give off more light.

ClassyMrsA, when we went to go sell our last house the realtor was worried about the hideous wallpaper in our teeny half bath. I got the first three walls down, but struggled with the fourth. We weren't about to shell out a ton of money so I bought the self sticking tile. It was incredibly easy to do and made the room look much better.

You can go all J. Gaines and shiplap all over that wall. I think they make self stick in that too so that it's not permanent if you want to change it in the future.
I have such a crush on your house, even more so because of the crazy reno you did on it.

I had no idea sticky blacksplash like that existed! That seems like the perfect solution for your kitchen ClassyMrsA.
kleigh, let me help you spend all of your money, please! I love a nice wallpaper. I'm considering it for part of our front room but I don't know if it would work. The ceilings are vaulted and it would be the wall with the stairs, which have carpet.
You're hired jubilantsquirrel !!! Also, need to pick a color to paint our front door. Our house is gray - I'll see if I have a picture. And would you paint the interior side of the front door the same color, or just a white that matches trim?
sophiegrace We are doing ship lap in the powder room right next to that dining space - too much in that case?! We obv love the ship lap idea lol
