madamewaffles, It's kinda pricey, but Hape has a fantastic activity cube. I think it's called Country Critters or something along those lines. 100% worth it. Really good quality, doesn't tip over like some of the cheap plastic activity centers. Really durable.
Ok, my kid has the following favorite toys: headphones, wallets, keys. Oh and the milk carton from either the fridge or the recycling... it's a problem if you don't have the lid on tightly.
Should you not wish to turn these household items into toddler toys / save your money: we got a micro scooter which ought to be a fun think as soon as I get a helmet (right now we just use it in the apartment), a kids karaoke machine (hilarious), and have been really lucky with books.
Oh and we got a walker that uses blocks as ballast. That has been a hit and she likes playing with blocks.

Lately DS has been all about books mostly but he's also been enjoying his train tracks and thomas trains (bought secondhand), the v-tech flashlight, and the little people zoo... he loves all the animals and knows what they all are and has them go down the slide and feeds them zoo food etc.
We had the fp learning table featuring puppy and it was a big hit for a long time (until he wanted to climb on it and stand and then I put it away).

LO's 1st birthday was this weekend, so lots of new toys over here. He loves the boxes... And tissue paper... And some of the gift bags are good too! Haha. For seals though... So far the pop-up tunnel is a big hit! He also likes his v-tech dump truck, books with flaps, and little people animals.
Have you guys seen those DIY "busy boards" on Pinterest? They are basically toys for toddlers where you take a board and then attach lots of random little hardware store things to it for them to play with - latches, buttons, levers, etc. Obviously time intensive but such a cool idea.
