Sorry I posted and went to bed.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in English, Poli Sci, Master of Arts in English.
Initially I wanted to go to law school so all of college internships were in the courts including a semester "abroad" at the DAs office in Philly, then got a job with the federal government advising of a federal law called ERISA (pension, health insurance,401k) and see folks get hired out of law school with loans doing what I am doing without loans. I have to field complaints and questions from the general public regarding issues with their employer, plus contacting the employer and enforcing compliance of the law when needed. It can be simple- telling an employer to send a Cobra notice, to incredibly technical- trying to reconcile the 7 different spreadsheets for their 401k to make sure they paid all the deposits into the plan and within the timeframes. I also have to do outreach events with the public, with CPAs and HR folks, and laid off workers. We also do some liason stuff with the Congressional offices when people complain to them, and if were unlucky- get called to court to testify when an employer doesn't correct something and the agency sues them. (That was probably way more than what you wanted to know).
I would like to change careers, so while my husband was working for a University here, I went and got my MA for free (well we had to pay the taxes on it but loan free) in the evenings after work, and that program required me to teach college Freshman English. It came to the point where I would have to quit my job to do the Phd- lose income, etc.. For 4+ years to start in another job making less... I just chickened out. So now I'm waiting for my husband to get solidly into his career and I'm hoping to be an adjunct- teach English and have more free time and take summers off.
I am also a writer, though the only thing I've published was non fiction. I used to run half marathons pretty regularly and all kinds of exercise.
The good thing about my job is that it leaves some downtime waiting for people to call and ask questions, where I can't do anything but wait for the next one. Sometimes we're really busy and sometimes slow. But that's why I'm on here all the time!
