In Portland last week, three men stepped in to stop another man, white supremacist Jeremy Joseph Christian, from verbally abusing two young women on one of the city's light-rail trains. Two of the men, U.S. Army veteran Ricky John Best, 53, and Reed College graduate Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, died from stab wounds after Christian drew a knife and attacked them. The third man, Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, is hospitalized because of his injuries but is expected to survive.
Best served in the army for 23 years and worked for the city of Portland. He was a father of four children and had recently run for local office. Namkai Meche was graduated from Reed College in 2016 with an economics degree and was interning with a local company.
Fletcher, the surviving defender of the two girls, one of whom was African American and the other of whom was reportedly wearing hijab, is a local poet. He also is, according to a 2015 profile in Venture magazine (p. 10), autistic...
