So we were completely baby proofed here. Or so I thought. Evie has recently started climbing the side of the stairs and squeezing through the tails and going upstairs. Not the worst thing in the world. She's fine on stairs and doesn't do it often Well today Caz did it. And e makes me nervous on stairs. Any idea how to baby proof this? They limb up the side and go in the heights spot.

I've been waiting for my son to do exactly what you mentioned. What about mesh baby bumpers tied really tight? Or (although this would look kind of odd) zip tying some wooden garden lattice?
similar to greenmonkey, I was wondering if maybe you could weave something along the rails, a mesh or fabric or something that would create a barrier that would be more difficult for them to get through??
It's the only thing I can think of without actually "boarding" up the railing.
How wide-set are your spindles? Joey was trying to get H's attention one night and got her head stuck, I'm surprised they can fit their whole bodies through them!

It's only the top one that they can fit through, and I was SHOCKED. Especially considering Evie has never been on the small side, but she's definitely thinned out, I geuss this is just the proof. I'm thinking I'll have to attach something to the wall, and then run something through the banisters, but who knows what they'll do to that. It also made me a little nervous, because we have a 2 story foyer at the top of the stairs, with banisters like that, but I think they're more closely places together. So hoping we don't have to completely close that in.
I was also going to suggest weaving something through it. Or you could always install one additional baluster (sp?) to that step.
I'd see about adding another spindle (wtf are these things actually called anyway?) to that top step. It might be more expensive than other options, but you have C plus another LO to get through and I'd get tired of something temporary/not-as-attractive there for so long.

I've seen lots of people use large pieces of plexiglass. You barely even notice it until you're up close and there is no way a kid is going to get through it.
A friend of mine lives in a second story town home and has a banister that runs her entire living room--they did the mesh (I'd have to ask her what exactly it's called) and they've never had any issues.

I think this is what we will probably do. Might as well match it up and make it a permanent change. Can't hurt! Thanks all!
