In the past week or two LO has really noticed and taken an interest in our 85 pound lab/golden mix. He hasn't really shown any interest in her which makes me sad because I really thought he would be the super protective type. I know it's still early and I think once LO has food, they will be bffs. For now he's not really sure what to think of her since all she wants to do is grab his ear. He just wants to lick her, which I'm not a huge fan of since he likes his butthole. When I put LO close to him he gets really skiddish and starts to jump as if he was playing with another dog. Any tips to help them interact? How are your LOs doing with your pups now that they aren't just lumps sitting in a swing?

My LO just noticed our two small dogs in the last 2 weeks or so. If we lay him down for tummy time he tries to "crawl" to them (kicks legs and moves arms while squeeing). One dog wants to lick his face and the other is hesitant of his jerky movements, but likes to sniff him. I hope the three of them can get along well!
Is anyone else's dogs a huge distraction while nursing? He hears their feet on the wood floors and starts looking around for them. So annoying.
Lo also just started watching our dog and wanting to grab his hair. Its cutebecause he laughs. I socialized my dog around a few little ones when he was younger and so far hes been really good. He likes to lick his face, but hes very gentle. And I hold los hand and help him pet the dog without just grabbing the dogs fur. Im worried about when lo gets mobile because our dog herds and he has tried to herd our friends little girl before when she was crawling. He basically ran around her and stood in front of her as if to tell her she couldnt go and she cried. I felt so bad. He also has been known to (very gently) take food out of toddlers hands. Sneaky stinker. If he herds lo hes gonna be in trouble and hopefukly learn boundaries as in Hello! Youre a DOG. Back off.
weeklyplanner my dog is a major distraction. The nails on the floor are bad, but so is the bone chewing and his guard dog tendencies. I can't have the front window open or he barks at anybody walking by. He also barks if there's someone at the door, if he thinks he hears something, if there's a squirrel in the backyard, if I don't let him back in in a timely manner, etc. And, of course, the barking only happens when LO is sleeping. I'm trying hard to be patient because I know he doesn't get out nearly as often as before, but come on buddy! That's why I was hoping to make him feel included by playing with LO, but he's not really about it.

Wow, LO does not get distracted when nursing at all. But he is definitely starting to show an interest in our dog. We tried to let him pet, but he just wants to grab fists of fur.
Our dog is a bit hesitant around the baby, but she just went through this last year. But with DS, she is all though and tumble like him. I think she's wary about baby.
That's what I'm hoping for. He is so food motivated that I think he will be all heart eyes when that first piece of food falls off the high chair.
I love dogs and have two. One is shih tsu that pretty much ignores everyone, DS included. The other is a rescue mutt that is obsessed (I mean obsessed) with licking LO. He does it every chance he can get. It is so annoying bc he just won't stop. I am hoping he may get a little scared off when LO gets bigger....but I have my doubts.
We have a little Yorkie mix and she is amazing with our boys. From the day we brought DS1 home she pretty much hasn't stopped protecting them, which is funny because of how small she is. She is really good about just getting up and moving if the boys are annoying her. LO has started to notice her more lately, but she is always all over us so they have no choice on interacting. As PP said, I hold his hand if he is trying to grab her fur so that he learns to pet her nicely. Now that DS1 is older, she loves that he runs around the house chasing her and throwing her toys around. They are pretty much best friends.
