Which recommendations will you follow?

I read "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster early on in the TTC process and am so glad I did...but I'm still deciding which official recommendations I will follow and which I won't. 

I'm not a huge drinker, so giving up alcohol won't be an issue (although I may have a glass or two in the second/third trimesters if I have a particularly stressful day...)

I will drink my usual cup of coffee in the morning (I will get an awful headache if I don't), as long as morning sickness doesn't keep me from it.

I probably won't avoid eggs or sushi. I will probably still cook my meat to medium. I will probably still eat pasturized brie.

The biggest thing to give up for me is turkey sandwiches, but that's one of the things that Oster says is a legitimate warning .

I'm not going to worry about which position I sleep in, etc.

How about you?

I am cutting out drinking 100%. I don't drink caffeine so that's not a problem. I also don't eat meat unless it is well done and I don't like sushi. I didn't know it was recommended not to eat eggs, but I love egg salad so I've had it a few times and thrown it back up in the last week. So I'm kind of repulsed by eggs right now. Apparently my body has made all those choices by itself.

-I won't be skipping any pasturized cheeses
-I only changed my sleeping position with my DD once it became uncomfortable
-I will probably skip runny eggs, and will not cut out any cooked sushi but will eat raw sushi sparingly, and after first tri.
-I'll probably have a small glass of wine once in awhile in third trimester
-My midwives have said they'd almost prefer a couple cups of coffee (I think up to 200mg of caffeine) than someone pounding tylenol like it's going out of style to stave off headaches, so I'll keep my coffee. Fun fact, it's way easier to "track" caffeine with espresso-based drinks than with drip coffee since the amount of caffeine in various brands of coffee swings wildly, but espresso is typically 70-85 mg a shot, so "fancy" coffee drinks is one of my pg "treats"
-I'll still eat deli meat, esp if it's from a sandwich shop during the lunch rush, because then I know that meat was definitely not sitting out for any length of time
-I won't take ibuprofen
-I won't go through the x-ray machines at the airport

Those are the only ones I can think of offhand...

I've never heard the deli meat thing, even with my first pregnancy, but I don't eat it a lot anyways. I did quit taking ibuprofen though.

The deli meat thing is risk for listeria... which can come from anything, really (the last big outbreak was cantaloupe), but sliced deli turkey is particularly at risk

 I should add, my husband is also now in charge of cleaning the litter box!

It's definitely my least favorite chore (so might make MH do it too), but the studies show generally that if you've had the cat for a while and its an indoor cat, you are not really at risk. You're more at risk gardening....

We have two cats. I don't garden so I don't have that worry. I just hate cleaning them so it is a good excuse. lol

I will skip the booze. I tried to skip the coffee and that lasted one day and I had the worst headache ever. So I switched to decaf. Other than that I can't think of anything else. Oh I will skip the roller-coasters at Disney

I will sleep differently, only because DD was born with a dislocated hip, which *may* have been caused by sleeping habits.

I'm also going to remove myself from Atkins, which is a pretty sore subject for me right now

Pretty much everything else will be fair game.

Nope. I have PCOS and by being on atkins & Metformin, I was able to not only lose weight but apparently conceive! Being PCOS, I have insulin resistance which may be a leading cause to my multiple losses. I'm worried about being off Atkins and having a loss. I'll be booking an appointment with a dietician asap to figure out where to go from here.

Oh wow I'm so sorry you've have to deal with this! I will keep you in my T&P! I was asking because I did Atkins when I was younger for seizures.

dazdareis will your doc do a diabetes check in the first tri? I had gestational diabetes with my son and while my sugars are good now, they will be testing me early. I know PCOS can cause insulin-resistance, and I thought women with PCOS were at higher risk for GD, but I could be wrong.

I did everything I was suppose to last time; no drinking, sushi, deli meat, ect and plan to do the same with my rainbow baby.
I will definitely be getting a new pregnancy pillow as my dog has claimed my old one. I side-slept because there wasn't really any other way to sleep towards the end, and that pillow was nice to tuck between my legs to keep my hips straight (also was great at keeping my basset hound from snuggling up too close to me in the middle of the night!).
This feels so surreal to be discussing pregnancy again. Terrifying, but I'm so hopeful I will have a take-home baby that it's worth the fear.

pickles4prez , I'm booking my first appt on Monday. Since I'm pre-diabetic, I'm sure they'll send me for the rest early 2nd tri. I had GD with my first and I'm positive I'll have it again. I agree about this being surreal!

I do. I've been controlled by medication with a few breakthroughs. They're not a huge problem though. I can live normally for the most part.

No sushi from mediocre restaurants (I'll still eat it from good, trusted ones).

Limit sugar intake. I'm overweight to begin with, and was borderline GD with DD.

No unpasteurized cheese.

No rare meat.

No ibuprofen.

I will absolutely eat: soft pasteurized cheeses, deli meat (you have a much higher chance of getting listeria from cantaloupe, lettuce, and soft serve ice cream) - unless an outbreak actually happens, my daily cup of coffee. I will change how I sleep just because I sleep face-down, which is not good after about 12 weeks. Plus my body pillow is so comfortable!

The only outbreaks of listeria in the last like 20 years (or something) have been cantaloupes, spinach, and soft serve ice cream (the machine want cleaned properly) - just stick with real ice cream

That's crazy about the soft serve, cantaloupe, lettuce! I boiled my hotdogs til they burst and I grilled my deli meats & ate them for breakfast so I wasn't concerned last time. But soft serve?! So disheartening. (We're gonna be 5/6 months pregnant in the summer, I doubt most of us will refrain at that point)!
