We have not flown with the kids yet so excuse the repetitive topic please. Sorry!
We are flying next month. We got Evie a seat, but h plans on holding Caz (good luck, h)
We will be flying and renting a car. Is it better to bring the car seat for evie on the plane and check one for Caz? Or should we just buy one of those FAA toddler seat belt things for the plane and rent a car seat for each kid while there? (Or some combination here)

Your rental car company may offer carseats. We have a Cosco seat that we've used when we flew before and gate checked it (that was before Sadie was 2 and needed her own seat) which worked well for us. If I were flying with Sadie now, I'd bring her carseat on the plane only because I think she'd sit still better strapped in.
we just flew this past weekend all four of us. We checked one seat and Henry was in the other on the plane. We checked the one I don't care about as much (the cheapo I got previously for Henry while traveling) and adjusted the more expensive one (normally Greta's) for his use on the plane. I really like having him strapped in, and I didn't have to worry about them banging up the car seat.
We just checked the carseat in a travel bag with our suitcases and he sat in the seat on the plane. He doesn't get too squirmy other than moving from the seat to my lap. Plenty of snacks and the iPad for a movie was all we needed. He thinks flying is pretty cool though. Also, flame if you want, but we just buckled him in with the airplane buckle. If the plane crashes I don't see a harness doing much.

I agree with that. for us the use of the carseat was not about safety but not wanting to check it and wanting to keep him more constrained (the last time we flew without it he was ALL OVER THE PLACE).
We flew when Abby was almost 2 and Jack was 5 months. We bought Abby a seat even though she was under 2 because we couldn't imagine both of us having a lap child the whole flight. We brought Abby's car seat with us and bought a $40 new one for Jack and shipped it to my ILs. My BIL (who has kids) installed it in MILs van before they picked us up at the airport. Both kids did great on the flight
We just flew last week with both kids. We checked both car seats at the gate. Kayleigh sat in her own plane seat using the regular old airplane seatbelt. Andrew obviously sat on our laps. Kayleigh did great and stayed in her seat with it buckled with no problems. She was so excited to be on a plane.
