Are you signing your LO for a swim class? I kind of want to...I can already hear my H telling me it's stupid but I don't care. Are they too young for this now?

I took J last winter. We went to the YMCA. They said that they dont start the REAL swimming stuff until they are 3. I guess it depends on whats available to you now. If its going to be a class that just makes them splash around its not worth it in my opinion. (Thats if you have access to a pool elsewhere) If you dont have a pool that you can bring her to to splash around and get comfortable with the water than id sign her up for a class. Even if shes not learning actual swimming lessons she will at least get used to being in a pool and around water.
I was going to last summer but they didn't offer the really little kid classes for the session I was looking at. I missed fall registration but we will be doing the one starting in February. I don't know if it's worth it, but she loves the water and it gets us out of the house.

We went a little country living last year and put a 10ft above ground pool in our back yard so she was in the water and loved it. Reading some of the class options, I'm not sure it's worth it now. We have a neighborhood pool so we might just do that
We took LO last year from when he was nine months to twelve months. He greatly enjoyed it. At that age, it was mainly about getting them acclimated to the water and trying to teach them to float. The teacher said they can start lessons in earnest around 18 months, so we plan on taking him back soon. I think we will wait until like March or April so that he is not going to be out in the extreme cold after having wet pool hair.
We are currently doing lessons, also at the Y. Lots of games and songs, but also introduction of skills such as blowing bubbles, kicking, and paddling, things I wouldn't necessarily know to teach DD on my own. I figure one round of lessons can teach ME what to focus on with her come summer.
We are planning on starting up for the next session. I was actually a swim instructor for a long time, and could teach him myself- but if we are signed up for classes we will actually go to the pool every week. Personally, I think it is really good for kids to have early exposure to the basics of swimming.

If we had the extra money for it, we'd definitely have LO in a class. We did a month of classes late last summer and LO mostly loved it. I think it's good to get LOs acclimated to the water. Plus LO always napped so well after! We have a neighborhood pool we'll probably join this summer.

DD did her first class at about a year, and her next level was around 15-16 months. Sure, there's not a lot of "real" swimming stuff, but it really helped her feel comfortable in the water. She loved jumping in and playing with the toys. The way our recreation system is set up, her next level isn't till 2, and I think she's got that and another level with us. Then she switches to classes by herself. DS has done all of them and we've been really happy with them. Totally worth it.
Ds1 started swimming lessons this past summer. I had thought about signing the boys up at an earlier age but everything I've read said that they don't really grasp the concept of swimming until they are around 3. I think its good to get little ones used to water but I don't really know if they can actually learn to swim until they are a bit older.

DS took "lessons" from our babysitter who is also a certified lifeguard. It basically got him comfortable in the water and jumping in. I'm thinking of registering him for real group classes so he can learn to swim without floating and underwater.
I'll probably do the same for DD. We have a pool membership and live there in the summer. DD loved floating around last summer.

I would love to get Ev in a swim class, she loves water. The problem I've been running into is our community ed class times are either while I'm at work or cross over into bed time - I don't think a tired baby would be good in a pool.

Do you have a Y nearby? Ours offers classes on the weekends.
We do. I'll have to check into them. I had been looking at community ed for budget reasons. I bet the Y is more reasonably priced than swim schools.

I'm trying to talk my DH into doing this with DD. He loves the water and I think it would be good bonding time for them. She is a mommy's girl so he needs it.

We just did them with both boys. My older son didn't do as well going under because he never had exposure to it. B, on the other hand, did incredibly well and even wanted to go under. I'm SO glad we signed him up when he did. I think at this point it's all about then feeling comfortable in the water more than it is teaching them how to actually swim. Being comfortable in the water will be very important in the coming years as they truly learn to swim.

We did a swim class for DS when he was 6 months and he loved it. After that though the schedule that they have at the community pool doesn't really work with our work/travel schedules. I really wish we would have been able to keep it up and I want to get him in them again. Maybe next winter.
We did a class at the Y from like March-June last year. I am thinking we will do the same thing again this year - just to get him comfortable in the water before we hit swimming season. He can't swim on his own at all, but it definitely helped to make him super happy in the water.
DH's grandparents live in a condo with an indoor pool and I've been try to go every other week with her on the weekends. Like others have said I just want to get her used to the water, so I don't see the need to pay for lessons if I can just use the pool for free.
