I've used the spacing recommendations in The New Square Foot Gardener book, and some graph paper. But, I don't have true garden beds, I'm working edibles into the border plantings.

I would love to do this. What do you plant as a border edible?

I found some interesting looking lettuces and spinach. Purple lettuce, that sort of thing. I think it will still be pretty clear that it's lettuce, but I figure it will be ornamental too. We have an HOA and limits on how big a designated "vegetable garden" can be, so I'm trying to be sneaky and get more veggies into my space!

Can you do some baskets/ pots with herbs or tomatoes to sneak more veggies in?

NariaDreaming, I might do that. We can have veggies, but the rules say that except for the lawn no single use can take up more than 20%. And we've heard that formal raised beds can be hard to get approved, plus we're planning on getting chickens next year so need to leave room for the coop (allowed by HOA, but design needs to be approved). And I'm putting In a compost bin, which also needs approval...the HOA committee is probably going to be sick of me submitting approval forms soon!
