I won't be doing this until she's old enough to fully understand the whole process and be able to be at least partially responsible for the care of the healing piercings. I'll also be taking her to a legitimate piercing salon, and not a mall kiosk.

This is what I'm currently leaning toward. The only reason I was considering doing it so young is so I could be completely in charge of the healing process. I was 5ish when I had my ears pierced and I effed them up when they were healing and the holes closed. I had to have them re-pierced later.
And no way Jose' to a mall kiosk.
Yeah, I think 5 is still too little. I'm thinking maybe 8 at youngest?
We will wait for her to choose it, too. I was eleven when I was allowed. I will let LO do it younger than that assuming that I'm sure she can be responsible for it. It depends on her personality. I've known five and six year olds who could absolutely handle it and ten year olds who couldn't so I will probably not have a pre-set age but let her earn the privilege by demonstrating responsibility if it's something she is interested in. My sister is 29 and hasn't done it so she may not care.
DD1 got her ears pierced at 4 months. They were fine until this past year. I have bought every kind of locking back earrings possible and she still maneuvers them off. We decided LO won't be getting hers done until she understands that they need to be kept in and clean.
I had a friend whose mother took her to get her ears pierced as kind of a "welcome to womanhood" when she got her period for the first time. I kind of like that idea, my health permitting. Although I guess it really depends on her personality and our relationship as she grows up. I don't remember when I got my ears pierced, I just know it was later in life but before my teen years. I have lots of memories of clip on earrings.
Ears gross me out and I'd probably puke if I had to clean them. Lord knows I was terrible at cleaning mine. I got mine done at 7. Next hole at 12. Third at 15. None of that included cartilage.
Confession: a large part of why I won't get her ears pierced as a baby is because I personally can't handle the pain cry. I feel like dying when she gets her shots.

my DD is 3 and she is starting to talk about earrings, but she has not asked to have it done yet. I'm waiting for her to want it done and help care for it herself.. let's be honest, kid doesn't even brush her teeth regularly.. so we have a ways to go!

I got my first hole at 2 years old but I think I'm going to wait until DD is older. I like the idea of her being able to clean and take care of them herself.

I'm waiting till she's at least 5 and asks for them. My niece got hers done at 7. She was so excited and it was a good experience. With prompting she's done a great job of taking care of them.

We will probably start thinking about it when DD asks. I have mine pierced but I never wear earrings, or any jewelry for that matter, it breaks me out. So it's not really a huge concern of mine.
This is a UO... My ears arent pierced and I absolutely HATE it on babies. I will not let our possible future daughters get it done until theyre older and never my son as long as I can help it. I think babies look so aforable until parents get ears pierced... It takes away from how cute they are naturally. It is pretty on some adults.
I wanted to get the girls' ears pierced by now, but we just haven't had any kind of time. 3 under 3 is hard, yo. I want to do it while they are still babies so I can make sure they heal properly and they can't mess it up yet. Everyone I know who had their ears pierced as a baby or had their daughter's ears pierced as a baby have never had problems with them. Only girls who get it done when they are pre teens or teens have issues that I've seen. /anecdote
This, exactly... And it was my experience to. My first holes (~6mos) are awesome, never have issues, ever. The ones I got at ages 13, 15, 18 were and are nothing but trouble. I rarely even use those holes anymore because they get irritated even with hypoallergenic, expensive earrings.
That being said, I would never take potential future little girl to a mall kiosk/store to have it done. Piercing salon or doc's office. (Mine were done initially at a doc's office)
