So we had our big evaluation yesterday and I am really upset. We spent most of the time with a fellow, and then like 15 minutes with the attending.
He thought her major issues are because she has ADHD. I'm sorry but it just doesn't sit right. I felt like he really dismissed our concerns about her other behaviors. He said that she doesn't make good eye contact and that she does not read facial expressions, but those are because she's inattentive. He based his diagnosis on the fact that he found her to be hyperactive when he saw her. She was giggling inappropriately, flapping her arms and spinning in circles. Meanwhile she had just spent two hours basically being interviewed or calmy playing while we waited. He also said her picking her face was an infection or a dermo issue. Even though I told him that we had done abx and rx steroids and that the picking was correlated to when she was trying to sooth herself. She said he didn't feel she was ASD because her interests aren't limited enough. But my understanding is that ASD is diagnosed (according to the DSM) by the social and communication deficits, inflexibility, plus either limited activities or repetitive behaviors. So he felt like she met the other criteria but wrote off the one he says is missing.
He recommended starting stimulants to treat her ADHD.
He said she may have Social Communication (Pragmatic) Disorder. And the fellow was pretty confident we would be solidly at that diagnosis in a few years. She even said that we would need speech therapy later to deal with her use of language and OT for her fine motor skills when she got older. That she would likely have bad handwriting, etc. And that she would do really well on a robotics team.
I just cried. I told them, it doesn't seem right. It just doesn't.
