High Thyroid? Please come in..

Hi ladies~

My recent set of labs have indicated that my thyroid level is high, and that I need to manage it now while TTC, and long term. This is entirely new to me, and I have no clue what this means. Both my OB and RE simultaneously gave this info with separate labs. I will see my OB on Thursday to discuss this.

For those who don't know my history from TD, I am very high risk. I did IVF and lost twin sons at 18 weeks, and was then diagnosed with an incompetent cervix and two blood clotting disorders. I did a frozen transfer to have my son, and had a cerclage and bedrest plus lovenox and P17 shots. I was also severely anemic both pregnancies. I am feeling some anxiety creeping in with this additional diagnosis and need for medication. Did I mention I'll be 42 this summer?....so there's that little gem.

Any insight? What did you experience, and how did you manage it during pregnancy? After?Was is a simple pill? Any side effects?

High TSH or high as in too much thyroid (hyperthyriod)?

I have hypothyroid and it was pretty easy to manage. 1 pill in the morning before eating anything. You wait 30min-1hr after to eat and 4 hours before/after any other meds or vitamins. I has my levels checked every month while pregnant and then at 6 weeks and 5 months pp.

ETA: No side effects for me at all.

I had my thyroid tested after my second loss.  I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. The results were that my numbers were within the normal range but at the high end. It was higher than my OB wanted for TTC. I've been taking generic Synthesis ever since. The amount has been adjusted a few times because they retested during my pregnancy with Anne and then after birth, then again during this one.

I haven't noticed any side effects except that you have to take it on an empty stomach and that is sometimes hard to when you are pregnant because you are always hungry.

ClassyMrsA, The only feedback from the nurse was that my thyroid level was above what it should be, but not excessively high. She prescribed Synthroid. I'll ask questions Thursday.

bethelgal42, Similar to you, mine is not off the charts, just slightly above. Will you take medication long term?

Any symptoms that indicated an issue, or just routine labs? Thanks ladies.

wifey Sounds like hypothyroid if they are giving you synthroid which means it would be high TSH not actually the thyroid levels (T3 and T4). The hardest part about it for me is remembering to take it first thing/without food. I actually just take it anyway and my levels have stayed right around 1 despite taking it with my breakfast. BUT it could cause you to not absorb as much so I don't recommend ignoring that part of it.

I'll probably just take it until we are done having kids, unless my doc thinks otherwise.  I had no symptoms except for the two losses. They wouldn't do RPL  testing until I had three so they were running all the tests they could to possibly find a cause.  I have no idea if it is the cause but I figure it can't hurt, so I keep taking it.

I appreciate the info! Does morning coffee count, then breakfast later? Serious question

I don't deal with it myself but Levi has congenital hypothyroidism so I deal with it every day. Your morning coffee would probably be ok if you don't put any cream or milk in it. The medicine binds to Calcium, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Iron. Levothyroxin is the generic of synthroid it does the exact same thing but is much cheaper, you might want to ask your doctor for that if Rx costs is an issue.

yummmy, Thank you, I held off on my coffee after I read this. DH picked it up last night and said it was $10. and I can see it is the generic that you mentioned. Appreciate it!

wifey - You're welcome. Let me know if you have any specific questions, I have done all the research out there about the disease, more in infants then adults, but I know a lot of the info. One of the big things that we have learned and been told by all his doctors is that medicine consistency is really the big deal. If you want to take it with coffee or whatever then always do that. Medicine dosage can be adjusted to what you need, but if some days you take it at 6am and other days at noon, some with a drink some without there is no baseline to adjust to.
