Hi. I had posted on the bump last fall and received so much great advice so I wanted to jump back in. At his 3 year appointment, our pediatrician was concerned with DS 's receptive language, echolalia and said he could have autism. She recommended a school evaluation which came back low receptive and low expressive, but they did not see a delay and did not offer services. We started private speech and then they recommended an ot evaluation because he has trouble focusing and sitting still. By october, the therapists were concerned with his scripted speech and how he plays. They said he does not know how to play on his own and he does parallel play. He also is obsessed with cars and he loves to line them up. They suggested that I call our pediatrician because they were concerned of autism. She recommended seeing a developmental pediatrician and gave me some names. I was able to get an appointment with one for June, I am on a waiting list for another.
I'm the meantime I called the school department and they admitted to seeing scripted language. They observed him for an hour at his preschool and then agreed to give him an IEP to attend our town preschool. He has a special needs teacher and works with a speech therapist weekly. He started in January and I am just this past week seeing a little more expressive speech from him.
We saw a neurologist a couple weeks ago at our local children's hospital. He was recommended by a mom I met who also has a son on the spectrum and received the initial diagnosis from this doctor. The doctor said DS needs further testing and now I am on a waiting list for an appointment to see a developmental psychologist. He always feels we could see an ADHD diagnosis down the line. He did not want to diagnosis at this young of an age. In the meantime, we have our June appointment with the developmental pediatrician who DS' s doctor recommended as her first choice.
When i see his pediatrician for his 4 year appointment in a couple weeks, I am going to ask about food therapy. The neurologist recommended a nutrionist, but my concern is DS will only eat a few foods and will not even try new things based on appearance. He is also started to reject and gag on foods it took me a long time to get him to eat and he was enjoying.
It has been a roll around coaster of a year with all the evaluations and filling out paperwork to try to get appointments for a diagnosis. I just want to know if my son has autism and if so, get him the services he needs. He is my very sweet and affectionate boy. I do see his delays though and when I read the 3-4 year old autism signs, I feel like I am reading a check list for DS. I also have a 21 month old daughter and she understands me so much better then DS did. I see huge differences in her speech. He had more words at this age and knew all his letters and numbers, but she can tell me her teeth hurts and he never did that this young.
Thank you for reading my story and even though I am still new with all this, I hope I can contribute.
