I know a few of you take your LOs to swimming lessons. I'm thinking ahead and wanna start getting some ideas for when DD is a few months older. Where do you take your LO? Are they reasonably priced?
We go to Mercy Healthplex. It's $55 for members and I think $90 for non-members. That price covers 6 weeks of 30-minute classes once a week. At first it seemed like 30 minutes wasn't very long, but it's definitely long enough for LO. Plus we can come early and stay after to play in the water as much as we want. We're going to our last one tonight. I'll probably sign up for a daytime swim lesson this summer when I'm off work. My only gripe is that the parking lot is huge, and there's a big lobby, and the locker rooms are downstairs, and it's just a long way to carry the baby, even if you get the closest parking spot. I use the Ergo just to get inside.
I used to belong to the Greater Miami Valley YMCA. I can say that the Butler Co and Fairfield facilities are nice, and they offer swim lessons to non-members. So that might be an option to look at as well.
Ymca ft thomas was $60 for 8 classes. If you are close to Mercy, do those because they have a great heated pool for the babes. The Ys pool is heated a little but not like a warm pool. It's been fine though for getting him used to the water. We even went under a few times with no tears after just a few lessons.

I take my DD to Hubbard Swim. It's 7900 Kemper Rd in Cincy. It's free until they are 6months. We love it! I actually haven't checked what prices will be but I love their program there!

DS has taken swim lessons a the Y since he was 12 months. He loves the water. He even did a swim camp for a week last summer. We have been very happy with them. This summer we are joining our community pool so he will do swim lessons there.

I JUST signed DD up for her first swim class at the Y. I actually snagged the last spot in their AquaBabies (ages 6 mo-36mo) Saturday class that starts in 2 weeks. I'm excited to see how she does! It'll be nice timing because it will end right before we go on our trip to Florida. And we'll likely be in the water a lot down there. So I hope she likes it!
The only thing I don't like about the swim lessons, is it's the same class for babies up to 3 years old. We get in the water and sing the same couple of songs and play the same games. I know there's not much else they can do with the babies before 3, but it would be nice to just change it up a little bit, ya know? It feels like a waste to sign up for another class, when I could just take him during open swim hours and do it on my own.

JoBub I've been thinking about that. I'm going to see how this first 6 week course goes at the Y. If I feel like I want to do more classes after this one, I might look into the classes offered at the Five Seasons Sports to change it up a bit. Maybe make my rounds until she's old enough to do some REAL swim lessons. My biggest thing with this first go round is to get her some survival skills. Like I mentioned, we're going on vacation the end of May and I want her to be better prepared to be around the water. Andplusalso, her sitter has an in ground pool. And so do my inlaws. So it's all about playing it safe for us at this point...and hopefully having some fun while we're doing it!

I'm registering DS at Bear Paddle swim school. It's pricey, which was my hesitation to register there, but I find it convenient for us for a lot of reasons. It's super close to home, the facility is great, all they do is 100% swimming, the class size is tiny, 5:1 ratio when they're in the beginning courses, 3 or 4 to 1 as they get into more advanced skills (parents are with children until 3 yo). You get charged on a monthly basis, but they work according to your child's needs. So if your child needs six weeks to master a skill, they take six weeks before moving up to the next skill or next level class, your lessons keep going, your registration or fee won't change. I like this because it's not like, you get six weeks then it's done, then you can re - register if you want, etc. They teach all the way up to competitive swimming, offer swim camps, etc. Also, it's year round, so you don't have to wait for a certain six week session to end before you can start, and they use a salt water pool that's heated to 90*, so no cold water or chemicals. But again, pricey, so I don't know how long we'll use them for.

If I've done my research correctly, Bear Paddle (also pretty close to me) was about the same price as Hubbard, so let me know how you like it, sstwinklinglites! I'll probably take her to Hubbard for the free for under 6mo class, just to get her used to water, and go from there.

I think you're right. I looked into Hubbard a while back, and was like, for the price, I'll go closer to home. But I too would be taking free classes if I could.

ladytiffany24 Have you looked into ISR lessons? I can't justify the price because we are rarely around a pool, but if we were around one on the reg, I would totally sign M up.
Looking into Hubbard since its closest to us. jmebormann is the water nice and warm? How old is your LO? What is a class like for the 2-5mo olds?
The water is like bath water:) I was told babie's can't regulate their body temp until 1yr old, so it has to be that warm. My LO is 5months now. A typical class goal is getting babies used to the water and ready for the next class. They don't go under yet, but you do sprinkle water on their heads. We put them on their back with the moms or dads holding them, putting them on a big foam mat with toys and their peers for tummy time, and playing in different things the instructor has to get them ready for the 6month+ class. It's only 30min which is perfect. I definitely recommend. Everything is done online for registering. I hope this helps!
I was just about to ask about ISR. I would like to do it but I might wait a bit.
I looked into it. There are a few different instructors in the Cincinnati/Dayton areas. IIRC, it was about $60/wk for 6-8wks. Each week consisted 1 10minute session 4-5x a week. I know most instructors do offer a limited number of scholarships. I called a few different places in August/September and they told me to get on a waitlist asap if we were serious about taking them.
Like I said, if we had a pool or if Max was going to be somewhere that had a pool or lake on the regular, then there would be no question about whether M needs these. I just can't justify the $400ish otherwise.
We belong to a swim club right near our house and are there all summer. I can't imagine him ever being out of my sight, but things happen so quickly. I would like to know he can float. I've been trying to do that with him with the swim lessons but he has no desire to float on his back right now.

mrscatfarmer13 - one of the ladies from my BMB just finished lessons with her son and she posted a video of him practicing at home (this isn't something you do without instructor approval and guidance). It was amazing how LO knew what to do and automatically rolled to a floating position.
