I wanted to introduce myself as I have been lurking for quite awhile. I was a pretty regular poster (my usernames were makeupgeek/sundaesprinkles) on the dump on May 13. Around October life got busy and I stopped posting but I still lurked. I followed everyone here and I would like to be more involved again.
My DS is 22 months old. Around 12 months his pedi became concerned with his receptive speech. By his 15 month appointment, when he still had no words and still seemed behind on his receptive speech, the pedi recommended EI. He was evaluated in September and started speech therapy in October. He has one session a week for an hour. In January we also added an OT twice a month because of some fine motor issues. We have finally seen some improvement starting in January. His receptive speech has improved so much and he also has about 10 to 15 words. However he still does not use his words very often. He also started signing "more", mostly in context with meals. He also started waving, pointing, and clapping, none of which he ever did before January. So he has come a long way.
He saw a developmental pedi in December at his primary pedi's suggestion. (Since at that time he hadn't made any improvements.) The developmental pedi said there was nothing physically wrong with him so he suggested he get evaluated for autism at this special clinic. There is a wait list for that, but they can't evaluate him for that until he's two anyway. He will be two in early May, and my MIL is a nurse and knows people that work there so they told us he will be seen as soon as he's two.
I have read a little about autism and I when I look at possible red flags he does have some of them but many of them he doesn't. His father, my DH, does have ADD so sometimes I wonder if he could possibly have that since he seems to have trouble focusing. But I know they usually do not diagnose that until a much older age. So in the meantime we are doing his therapies and we're so proud of the skills he has gained. I've also enrolled him into preschool starting in September. He will be going twice a week for 3 hours a day. I think it will be so good for him because there are no other children really in the family so he's never around other kids. I've talked with the director and they have a good bit of experience with kids with speech delays so I think hopefully it will be a good fit.
I really appreciate this board and I hope to be able to contribute although I'm still new to all of this.
