What would you do with leftover medication...

I have several boxes of medication that I never even opened from IVF and the pharmacy won't take them back.  I have about $1200.00 worth of medication left just sitting in my fridge and I am not really sure what to do with them. I don't want to throw them out because I feel it would be a waste of money but I can't use them. I would rather give them away to someone who would want them. They are still sealed shut. Ideas on what I could do?

You can see if your RE's office will take them, they sometimes accept them for donations to other patients. But not all will- mine wouldn't.

You can lurk the infertility board here, on the old site there was a med donation person who linked up people with meds with people who needed them & you would mail them to them. Not sure if that thread made its way here, I did a quick search and couldn't find it...

I gave mine to a fellow lgbt bumpie last year who needed them, I knew they were staring IVF & wanted to pass them on to someone who paid out of pocket for meds. There were two people who were doing IVF so I just PMed them what I had and someone wanted them. Mine were thankfully covered by insurance, so I was happy someone was able to save some money!

We got in touch with a person on a local site who gave us progesterone bc our copay was &75 at that point .

We held onto ours for a long while before I was ready to part with them. When I felt ready we passed some onto a friend and donated the rest back to our clinic.

We donated our stim meds (follistim and menopur) to a friend of J's from grad school. We knew she and her husband had been struggling with infertility for a long time, and she reached out to J to talk about IVF when she learned that William was conceived that way. She came over to meet William when he was 3 weeks old and she left with our left over meds. She just gave birth to boy/girl twins at the end of February. They were conceived following a fresh cycle with our left over meds.

We actually kept our Lupron. It is good for 2 years, and we still have a 2 week kit at home. I discussed this with the nurse at our RE's office today, actually, and she confirmed it is OK to use that for this FET cycle since it has not expired yet and has been stored properly. So we will be saving ourselves some money with that! It also makes me feel like there is a connection between our last cycle and this cycle. I know that is silly, but I still like to think about it that way.

I have heard of a lot of people donating their left over meds to fertility clinics. Some clinics will take them, and others won't. I would recommend looking into it in your area. I know of at least 1 clinic here that will take left over meds if they are unopened even if you didn't have your treatments there. I would have donated there if we had not donated to our friends.

I held on to mine till I had the baby in hand, then I just asked around. (Word of mouth) My Clinic doesnt take them back, but they also may know of someone in need.
