"one of those cases where everything went together in the wrong way" insinuating that guns are safe, and keeping them around is safe, precautions were followed... NO. That statement makes me ragey. The gun was not locked up, the gun was loaded... those are a lot of things wrong with this situation.
I'm in a bad mood today so I am faster to make enemies on this topic, but this is infuriating.
MOST paintball markers do not look like actual guns. There are a few - a small category of them - but mostly they are obvious.
This exactly. I feel that way whenever I hear about children playing with firearms, especially when accidents happen. A responsible gun owner would never leave their guns lying around in reach of children, nor would a responsible gun owner keep a gun loaded. Most kids don't know how to do these things, and clearly in this case if the kids thought it was a paintball gun they certainly didn't load it with ammo themselves.
I've never felt unsafe having guns in my house, but that is because my H has always taken very careful precautions to ensure that only the people with the proper knowledge and access can get to his guns, and then get to the ammunition which is stored separately and locked separately.
ETA: I didn't actually read the story. I just can't bring myself to open it. So I'm responding only based on what you guys have already posted.

I will not be opening this story but I am thankful for the posts here that talk about safe gun ownership. I do believe its possible. I wish people were smarter. Things like this don't have to happen.
They need super fucking hard penalties for parents and adults in the home with the guns when this happens. I don't want to hear "Oh but they've suffered enough." If this was punishable by life in prison, I am willing to bet that more of these idiots might think twice about leaving guns loaded and accessible to children.

Every time I see one of these stories, I think of my friend. His younger brother, younger sister, and he all grew up in a house with a lot of guns. They knew what they were, and what they were for. (Big hunting family.) No accidents, no craziness, all good.
