My coworker is potty training her 8 month old.

She asked me this morning if I knew if a local daycare took infants.  I said no, they do not take children until they are potty trained.  She said "oh, baby is potty training now.  He doesn't pee in his diaper.  I hold him over the toilet and go "pss, pss, pss" and he pees in the toilet."

It was all I could do to keep a straight face.

It's a thing called elimination communication.

But, no, baby isn't really potty trained in the sense that baby holds the bladder, feels a full bladder and then eliminates of his own free will into the toilet.

Peeing over a potty because you're being held over it and mommy happens to catch it in time is not the same thing as potty training.

I started training my son at 16 months because he was ready (he was fully trained by 20 months), and I thought THAT was early. But the general rule of potty training is you can't truly train your child until THEY are ready. They have to be capable of walking to the toilet themselves, actually acknowledging that yes...they peed/pooped in a toilet and that is how you are suppose to do things, and understand that peeing any place other than the toilet is not what is done. If they can't do all of that-- they are too young.

My son at 16 months sat on his potty on his own and started going (would mock his mommy or daddy) without us forcing him, so we knew that was the best time to try.

How long does she have to hold the baby over the toilet saying psh psh psh..... ? Technically you could do that with any species.

BTW she sounds BSC... she will probably be saying he can talk full sentences next.  Read books after that.... all before 1 year of course.

She is a little off, I love hearing her baby stories.  We had to go to a storage shed together the other day and she told me I shouldn't go in because there may be mouse poop.  I'm like I'm not going to eat it!

True story, we were at the local zoo here for a field trip. I took my daughter into the bathroom after lunch so she could go. There was a lady that walked in right after me, pulled out a child size potty from her huge bag and took her baby out of the carseat and sat her on it. I politely asked how old she was.....10mos. She says "O we have been using a potty for 2mos now, she wears undies and is doing so well" so I of course asked how long she leaves her sitting on the potty...20min. I politely smiled and washed my daughters hands and we left.

This really is a thing, it's called elimination communication. My SIL started it with her baby at 3 months, I'm not even kidding. She says that he consistently poops and pees on his little potty when she holds him on it, I don't know if she makes the sounds or not.

Both she and my MIL asked me at Christmas if we were planning to do EC as well. I laughed, thinking they were joking. They weren't. Oops?

I blew it off with a "Oooh, I'm glad it's working so well for you." I have no intention of trying it, whatsoever.

Sitting a baby on a potty for 20min is insane!

That said EC isn't actually crazy...
I caught a poo of my niece's when she was all of 2.5mo old. She made the poo face and I held her over the potty. Poo in potty. Yay!
I do this with my 14 mo old too. If she wakes up dry I put her on the toilet and she pees. If I see her poo face I put her on to poop.
This is not potty training. I'm just following her cues.

I was being TIC but really, I'll probably use EC too. Why wouldn't I want to avoid changing a diaper? It's so obvious when a kid is pooping too.

I will not, however, claim my kid is potty trained and send him/her to a daycare that doesn't do diaper changes. SMH

Because it's actually easier to change a diaper a few times a day than to watch your kid like a hawk for signs of possibly having to pee and then holding them up over the potty until they do.  I guess I get doing it for poop because it's easier to tell, but even then.  Especially with my second, I did not necessarily notice right away when she pooped.

EC is NMS, but I don't judge or care if others do it, but to me changing a diaper is NBD, and EC sounds like a ton of work.

That's awesome! She totally has YOU potty trained! Hehe! But really, I can imagine this happening on occasion, it's kinda how you'd get them started right? Get them comfortable in recognizing when they have to go, where they go etc.

In Cambodia and I'm assuming other third world countries, they do the "pss pss pss" thing to encourage their kids to pee. Since very few have diapers, it saves you from getting pissed on.

Yeah EC is totally NMS. My sisters BIL/SIL tried this with their first. Needless to say, it didn't last too long before they were using diapers.

I'm hoping it helps her get used to doing it in the toilet and head off any fears that some kids get of the potty!!
I especially like the poops in the potty. They're my favorite!!
