I'm FDL (FineDoubleLine), I was on GKU and TTPG on and off since 2013. My husband and I have been trying to conceive since 2010. After a little over a year of treatments for male factor infertility I get to join you all! I got my third beta today and finally feel comfortable writing my intro.
I'm 30 and my husband is 31, this will obviously be our first baby! We have been best friends for 15 years and married for 5 years. I like to bake, sew, garden and crochet. We have two dogs but we are thinking of adding chickens.
Chickens! Id love chickens but I don't think dh would ever agree. Are the free range over your whole yard? Do they make a mess?
We live in a smaller neighborhood and about 1/3 of our neighbors have backyard chickens. Most just free range in the backyard.
I've wanted to get chickens for a few years but my DH was against it. After talking to our neighbors and his coworkers that keep chickens he has come around to the idea. His co-worker has 6 chickens for us that we are hoping to bring home in a few months (my husband's work schedule is really busy right now, so we don't have much time to build the coop and run right now.)
We are going to meet them in a few weeks, they are 3 months old right now. My husband's co-worker just has too many in his flock right now. He has sent us pictures and showed my husband videos of the chickens. They have a nice, friendly and docile temperament.
We plan for them to have free range of the backyard when we are home, so we can keep an eye one them. Especially until the dogs get used to them. It will also keep down on the mess and they can forge in the backyard, which will keep down in pests for us. They will be out for at least the last half of the day until they go in their coop to roost at night.
If you are really interested in raising chickens and have some concerns, I'd recommend checking some books out at the library. I read some books from the library and bought a few. A good one is "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens." Most books will go over the care involved and different methods of keeping chickens. You can also learn about the different breeds and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Overall, most of the people that I know that keep chickens are happy they do it. I do need to do some research on caring for them while I'm pregnant and see if there will be any extra precautions I need to take.
